Red Buttons Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 13, 2006.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Red Buttons, the carrot-topped burlesque comedian who became a top star in early television then went dramatic to win the 1957 Oscar as supporting actor in "Sayonara," died Thursday. He was 87.

Buttons died of vascular disease at his home in the Century City area of Los Angeles, publicist Warren Cowan said. He had been ill for some time, and was with family members when he died, Cowan said.

With his eager manner and rapid-fire wit, Buttons excelled in every phase of show business, from the Borscht Belt of the 1930s to celebrity roasts in the 1990s.

His greatest achievement came with his "Sayonara" role as Sgt. Joe Kelly, the soldier in the occupation forces in Japan whose romance with a Japanese woman (Myoshi Umeki, who also won an Academy Award) ends in tragedy.

Josh Logan, who directed the James Michener story that starred Marlon Brando, was at first hesitant to cast a well-known comedian in such a somber role.

"The tests were so extensive that they could just put scenery around them and release the footage as a feature film," Buttons remarked.

Buttons' Academy Award led to other films, both dramas and comedies. They included "Imitation General," "The Big Circus," "Hatari!" "The Longest Day," "Up From the Beach," "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" "The Poseidon Adventure," "Gable and Lombard" and "Pete's Dragon."

A performer since his teens, Buttons was noticed by burlesque theater owners and he became the youngest comic on the circuit. He had graduated to small roles on Broadway before being drafted in 1943.

I miss you my friend.

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

The one thing about getting older is that the people you watched and admired when you were a kid get older also. As much as you wish they were still around to entertain your children, sadly, such is not the case. We have lost many fabulous entertainers that will in no way be replaced. The time of good, clean family entertainment is long gone. I have seen many great names written throughout this tribute to Mr. Buttons, and remember each and every one of them from when I was a kid. We may never of known you personally, but as an entertainer, you were regarded as a great actor and comedian. The roles you portrayed were meaningful. Even on the "Roasts" there was nothing out of line. I had the unfortunate experience of watching a "Roast" recently on a cable channel and turned it off, it was very offensive.

Unfortunately, that is what this new wave of comedians thinks is funny.

You knew when the Dean Martin Roasts were on that you could sit with your family and watch and not be offended. Thank you to the comedians and entertainers of that era for bringing great family entertainment to television. These shows were so popular, they are now selling episodes on DVD and VHS. I would like to thank the creates of the VCR and DVD players for letting us keep these entertainers, like Mr. Buttons, alive by being able to watch the "old" movies and television programs.

You are a great entertainer Mr. Buttons and I know you are entertaining them in Heaven.

Hi-dee-hi-dee-hi-dee-ho, Pockets. You will get your dinner.

Rest in Peace.

TO:AMY AND ADAM, MY CONDOLENSES, AND TO ALL OF HIS FANS (INCLUDING ME!) WHO LOVED HIM, AND ENJOYED HIS GREAT TALENT. I FOUND OUT WHAT A CLASS ACT HE WAS MANY YEARS AGO. IT WAS MY FIRST TIME GOING TO SEE A LIVE ACTOR ON STAGE, BY MY SELF. THE FEW TIMES I HAD GONE, I WAS WITH OTHER PEOPLE. THE PLAY WAS GREAT, OF COURSE, BUT AFTER WARDS RED CAME OUT AND TALKED TO THE AUDIENCE. IT WAS WONDERFUL. I SO MUCH WANTED TO ASK HIM TO PUT HIS HAND TO HIS EAR AND SAY,"HO HO-HE HE"! BUT I LACKED THE COURAGE TO DO SO IN THOSE DAYS. WHEN I WENT HOME, I WROTE A LETTER TO HIM AND MAILED IN TO THE THEATER, TELLING HIM ABOUT IT. A FEW DAYS LATER, I RECIEVED A LETTER FROM HIM! WITH A LITTLE STICK MAN DRAWING OF HIMSELF WITH HIS HAND TO HIS EAR, AND THE WORDS, "HO HO - HE HE" WRITTEN NEXT TO IT! I EMBRACED THE LETTER AS THO I WAS EMBRACING HIM. YOUR DAD WAS THE SWEETEST AND FUNNIEST MAN. SOME ONE ELSE MENTIONED ANOTHER "RED" - I SEE THEM BOTH NOW-TELLING EACH OTHER FUNNY STUFF - AND NOT A DIRTY WORD BETWEEN THEM! SOME TIME LATER, I REMEMBER READING SOME WHERE THAT HE USED TO WRITE LITTLE NOTES TO YOU, AMY. BECAUSE WHEN HE CAME HOME FROM WORK, OF COURSE YOU WERE ALREADY IN BED. AND SO HE WOULD LEAVE IT FOR YOU TO READ WHEN YOU WOKE UP. I THINK THEY WERE LITTLE POEMS, BUT I'M NOT SURE. (THAT WAS A LONG TIME AGO) HOW LOVED YOU MUST OF FELT I KNOW HE DOESN'T NEED PRAYERS, BECAUSE THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT HE IS HAPPY IN HEAVEN -JUST WHERE HE BELONGS NOW THAT HIS LIFE HERE HAS RUN IT'S COURSE. BUT I DO SEND PRAYERS TO YOU BOTH AND TO THE REST OF THE FAMILY. I KNOW YOU WILL MISS HIM DEARLY - BUT WHAT WONDERFUL MEMORIES YOU HAVE TO KEEP YOU THRU THOSE TIMES! IN GOD'S LOVE, JOY
