Sam Carr Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 24, 2009.
JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Sam Carr, a drummer who was considered an anchor in the blues scene that continues to draw fans to the poverty-stricken Delta region where the music form was born, died Monday. He was 83.

Carr died of congestive heart failure, said John Andrews, director of Century Funeral Home in Clarksdale.

Carr had a reputation as one of the best blues drummers in the country, but he made his living in the Mississippi Delta where he was raised.

At one time or another, Carr had backed big names like Sonny Boy Williamson II and Buddy Guy.

Carr had received multiple honors, including the Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts in 2007. He also received several awards from Living Blues magazine.

Carr's father was 1930s blues guitarist and vocalist Robert Nighthawk who made famous the song, "Sweet Black Angel." Early in his career Carr often played with father.

Carr was born Samuel Lee McCollum in 1926 near Marvell, Ark. His name was changed after he was adopted as a toddler by a Mississippi family with a farm near Dundee, according to a biography written by Barretta.

He moved back to Arkansas at age 16 and collected money at door of clubs where his father performed.

He worked as a sharecropper before turning his full attention to blues music, moving to St. Louis and playing bass with harmonica player Tree Top Slim.

He returned to Mississippi in the early 1960s and formed the Jellyroll Kings.

Mr. Sam Carr was well known for his creative and imaginative way in playing the drums.
At John 5:28, 29, Jesus said: “The hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out.”
Mr. Carr may be gone for now, but soon he has the Hope of a Resurrection.
Keep hope alive!

For Sam...a drummer who was considered an anchor in the blues scene that continues to draw fans to the poverty-stricken Delta region where the music form was born.

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

I spent 6 months in Clarksdale Ms in 2005 and had the opportunity to see Mr Carr perform many times. One evening at Reds I sat down with him and had beer and Barbeque before he played with "T-Model" Ford. He talked about some of his history with me as if I was someone he had known for years. It was quite a memorable experience for me.

I am sad to have learned of the passing of this ledgend.

I know Sam was loved by all who knew him. My mon was a resident of Washington county which I consider my home. I am a native of Louisiana but every time I visit the Delta it gives me a warm feeling. Part of that warm feeling comes from the awsome Blues community I enjoy with each return to the part of the country my mom so loved. I know Sam had to be a special person. I never met Sam but if there is anything I can do to help you please do not hesitate to contact me. Anyone in the Blues community of the Delta is a freind for life. God bless you and your family.
Sam you will be missed.
I look forward to someday meeting you in heaven.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

To Carr Family

Sincerest condolences to you upon the loss of your loved one. Indeed, it is a loss to all who know and love the blues as he helped to create it. Since being a little preshooler in 1950's Northwest Louisiana and East Texas, I have enjoyed patting my foot and swaying along to the rhythms of Mr. Carr's back-up harmonica and break-out drumming. May cherished memories of him be with you always.

To the Carr Family,

Although I never met your loved one, I have a particular affection for drummers, my son is a drummer.
I would like to offer my sincere condolences.

I often find comfort in times of distress by reflecting on such scriptures as Psalms 34:18. There it tells us that Our Heavenly Father is near those that are broken in heart; And those who are crushed in spirit he saves.
May your family find similar comfort in this scripture and the bible text found at Revelation 21:3,4.

September 29, 2009

Mr. Carr's musical legacy will keep him alive and remain in the hearts of music lovers everywhere.

To the family of Sam Carr: I hope this scripture gives you something nice to reflect on now and the days ahead, "...Before him pour out your heart. God is a refuge for us." (Psalm 62:8)

I would like to extend my Sincere Condolences to the Carr Family. I didn't have the pleasure of knowing Mr. Carr, but my dad loved the blues so I'm sure my dad heard his music at one time or another. I find comfort in the Bible when I think of my dad who has died where it tells us that "Our heavenly father will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things has passed away." Yes, Almighty God has not only the power but also the desire to resurrect persons whom he chooses. I hope the family finds comfort in this text.

Sam Carr, one of the greatest drummers, dedicated his life to the music he loved and shared it with his family, fans and friends around the globe. He will be missed very much. Sam and Doris were very kind people. Sam's smile and low keyed disposition was much like his mother, My Aunt Mary Myles, (aka) "Stringbean", and he loved my dad his uncle, James Griffin, aka ( Jim, Kid or Tampa). Both deceased also. He was very pleased to talk about a future with out sickness as the Bible promises, Isiah 33:24 and the resurrection hope at John 5:28 & 29. We look forward to seeing them again without the pains they have already suffered. Encouragement is extended to the whole family to do as Jesus said at Matthew 6:33 and John 17:3 to be able to see them again.

I had the priviledge of seeing Sam and his wife Doris on many occassions ... both as a drummer and as a local citizen. I always found Sam to be a quiet and unassuming person ... and even with all he had done in his life, very humble. The Delta and the Blues are richer for the time Sam Carr was there, and sadder now that he is gone. Rest in Peace Sam ... You've been called up to a bigger stage.

Sam and Doris were our only neighbors there in Powell, MS. I was just a little kid and Sam was always more than willing to help me with my troubles...getting my line untangled when I'd be fishin off the bridge, getting my three wheeler to crank, taking care of our animals. Doris was the only babysitter we ever had...they truly were our family! I miss them both, but I am glad they are at peace and together again! He just missed his "long legged Lizzie" too much!!I l know I will see them again!
