Peter Benchley Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 12, 2006.
NEW YORK (AP) - Peter Benchley, whose novel "Jaws" made millions think twice about stepping into the water even as the author himself became an advocate for the conservation of sharks, has died. He was 65.

Benchley died Saturday of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, according to his wife, Wendy.

Thanks to Benchley's 1974 novel, and Steven Spielberg's blockbuster movie of the same name, the simple act of ocean swimming became synonymous with fatal horror, of still water followed by ominous, pumping music, then teeth and blood and panic.

Benchley, the grandson of humorist Robert Benchley and son of author Nathaniel Benchley, was born in New York City in 1940. He attended the elite Philips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, then majored in English at Harvard University, from which he graduated in 1961. He worked at The Washington Post and Newsweek and spent two years as a speechwriter for President Johnson, writing some "difficult" speeches about the Vietnam War, Wendy Benchley said.

The author's interest in sharks was lifelong, beginning with childhood visits to Nantucket Island in Massachusetts and heightening in the mid-1960s when he read about a fisherman catching a 4,550-pound great white shark off Long Island, the setting for his novel.

While Peter Benchley co-wrote the screenplay for "Jaws," and authored several other novels, including "The Deep" and "The Island," Wendy Benchley said he was especially proud of his conservation work. He served on the national council of Environmental Defense, hosted numerous television wildlife programs, gave speeches around the world and wrote articles for National Geographic and other publications.

The author did not abide by the mayhem his book evoked. In fact, he was quite at ease around sharks, Ms. Benchley said. She recalled a trip to Guadeloupe, Mexico last year for their 40th wedding anniversary, when the two went into the water in a special cage.

A gracious and respectable person whose work has done so much to bring so much joy to many of us and made us aware in these troubled times hard to deal with (2 Tim 3:1). Perhaps more will continue to have positive experiences from a wonderful work that has had an impactful contribution to life and its anxieties.

For Peter...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

I was so sorry to hear of the loss of
Mr Benchley, his creative talent will be missed. I'll probably never again venture very far into the ocean but it's a small price to pay to enjoy his books. Thanks for the fun of being scared to death!!
I would like to encourage his loved ones with the Bible's promise of a resurrection and the end of death in the near future for obedient mankind. John 5:29; Rev 21:3,4

Peter Benchley along with H.P. Lovecraft were the first two authors that inspired me to become an author. So for me to write "Leviathan's Ghost" it gave me more a reason to keep Benchley's spirit alive. And much of his influence will live within my work, much more so now after his death.

As a short story writer, I found Benchley's influence as a vehicle for my characters too being they are reading a lot of his novels in the story. Thank you Peter for what you contributed to the horror genre, I wish you were alive long enough to accept a Bram Stoker lifetime achivement.

I remember when "JAWS" came out in theaters,I was just a kid and living in FL.

That summer people at the beach did just that, stayed on the beach and didn't dare go into the water.

I still to this day have a respected fear of swimming in the ocean.

Mr.Benchley was an Awesome writer.

Jaws seemed like a real scarry movie when I was little. Now as an adult, it really is a mild scarry movie compared to all the wicked stories that are written now days. For his talent, he surely will be missed. Please accept my sympathy for the loss as a friend to many. We look forward to the day when we will all can say that "death will be no more." After 'Jaws' my generation could never romp around carelessly in the ocean without John Williams' theme music playing in our heads. Still have never observed a shark in the wild but enjoy scuba diving. Better to be under the surface than on the surface!

I remember how engrossed I was reading the first Jaws book in my bed one morning. My darling two year old son felt neglected and proceeded to hit me in the head with one of his toys. I did turn my attention to my son but spent years watching the Jaws movies whenever I could. My sincerest condolences to your family.

I once had the opportunity to tell Mr. Benchley this story. My 4 year old nephew Dylan will never be affaid to go in the water, because he says when you hear Jaws coming "Dant, Dant, Dant,Dant" you just get out of the water. We had a great laugh. I am so glad I was able to share this story with him.

May God be with Mr. Peter Benchley and his family during this time. I was 11 years old when Jaws came out in 1975 so my parents would not let me see it, but when I was old enough, whoa! The music, the blood and that big shark. I loved the movie. I read your book too and enjoyed it very much. My 8-year-old and 11-year-old nephews now love the movie. Thank you Mr. Benchley for bringing us Jaws. God Bless You.

To The Benchley Family: May the Lord be with you and Peter at this time. July 2, 1975 sticks in my mind so vividly. I went to the opening performance of "Jaws" at the 2:00 show at the Midland Theatre in Kansas City, MO. I have been terrorfied of the ocean since. What a master of terror. I truly enjoyed Peter's work, and will miss him terribly. Thank you for all the wonderful books about the ocean. May you rest in peace.
