Tommy Newsom Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 30, 2007.
PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) - Tommy Newsom, the former backup bandleader on "The Tonight Show" whose "Mr. Excitement" nickname was a running joke for Johnny Carson, has died. He was 78.

Newsom died of cancer at his Portsmouth home Saturday, according to his nephew, Jim Newsom.

Newsom, who played saxophone, joined "The Tonight Show" in 1962 and rose from band member to assistant music director. He retired along with Carson in 1992.

"The Tonight Show" received five Emmy awards during Newsom's years on the show.

"I hope he will be remembered as a gifted musician," Jim Newsom said Monday in a telephone interview. "I'm sure he will be remembered for his wit and deadpan humor on 'The Tonight Show.' And to some of us a certain age, he will always be remembered as Mr. Excitement."

That was the nickname Carson gave Newsom to make light of his low-key personality and drab brown and blue suits - a sharp contrast to the flashy style of bandleader Doc Severinsen.

"He became a running character in Carson's monologue," Jim Newsom said. "Tommy enjoyed that."

Not long after the Carson era ended in 1992, Newsom remarked that his image as an ordinary guy was "fairly accurate - compared to Rambo."

"I realize things have to end sometime," Newsom said at the time. "I felt regrets at it ending and there was a sense of relief in a way."

Along with his work on "The Tonight Show," Newsom arranged and composed music for Skitch Henderson, Woody Herman, Kenny Rogers, John Denver and other performers.

I always enjoy seeing (and hearing) Tommy Newsom, on the wonderful reruns of The Tonight Show, with Johnny Carson. Such wit and personality is unsurpassed, with Tommy. We miss him, along with Johnny and Ed. Such a great trio. Tommy really held his own, whenever he was addressed, in the show. A real trooper!
God bless you, Tommy. See you in Heaven!
Love and blessings,

I went to this rather small college in Virginia: Madison College, known better as JMU nowadays. So, the Jazz Band was quite good and the director was a collegue of Doc Severnson's back up director and lead Tenor Sax player Tommy Newsom. Most folks don't recall Tommy much and he died a few years back. Well, Mr. Newsom was asked by Doctor West to be a guest performer at Home Coming back in October of 1974. I wasn't in the Jazz Band, but I was the stage crew manager (a work study scholarship). All this to mean that I wasn't anybody and didn't expect to be any other that night. Well, Mr. Newsom played a few numbers and took a rest. He came side stage and sat by me! Now he didn't know me from Adam and still he talked to me like I was Dr. West or someone of value!! I was totally stunned and in awe of this Jazz Great! Tommy, as most called him, would compliment students playing special solos or such. He would encourage them and congratulate them. He would talk to me about how a certain student did well, never ever making a negative statement NOT ONCE. I recall our First Sax player, Ray Ferrara, coming off back stage to continue after intermission. He was on cloud nine!! Tommy had asked him to play a duet with him on a number they were about to play. I remember Ray say, "I'm going to play with Tommy Newsom!!" I was so glad for Ray!! Well, that was the high point of my day, week, and serves to uplift me even now. More important things fell my way, one of the most being recognizing my need for a savior and lord. It was in 1977 that I received Christ in my life in full earnest. THAT was the best decision and day of my life: recieving Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior!!! Still, I give ole Tommy credit for his input...not spiritually, but as an example of positive encouragement.

For Tommy...

I wonder have you, Johnny, Ed
and other Tonight Show Members
putting on the big show up there?

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

The first time I watched The Tonight Show, I was 8 years old and was hiding under the couch! That was before it moved to California and was then 90 minutes in length. I WAS HOOKED! I have missed Johnny Carson and the whole gang since they left the airwaves. An era is passing before our eyes.
My thoughts and prayers are with Tommy's family.

Dearest Newsom Family:

Tommy's passing is a great loss to all. What a talented, and truly gifted man he was. I will always remember him as the target of Johnny Carson's jokes. He played the part so well, with the wit and charm of a comic master. He was also indeed a fine musician, band leader, and professional. If you can laugh at others you have a sense of humor. If you can laugh at yourself, then you have virtue. That's what Tommy did, he laughed at himself. It's hip to be square, and Tommy knew that. God bless Tommy Newsom.

Once in a while, Tommy would get to play a feature with the Tonight Show Band on either side of a commercial break. The TV viewing audience would only get to see and hear him play for a few fleeting seconds. But what wonderful brief moments those were. He was an utterly fabulous saxophonist, always masterful, on fire and authoritative. Viewers at home would exchange "who knew" looks when he cut loose. And the studio audience would always go wild. You would have too if you had been there on a night when the bank examiner in the brown suit got one of his occasional chances to blow the house down. What a talent. God bless him.
