Wallace Ohrt Obituary

Wallace Leighton OHRT Born June 29, 1919, in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan to Norman and Sigfrid Ohrt, passed away on May 6, 2008. In the fall of 1919 the Ohrt family left Canada and relocated in Medford, Oregon. The family moved again in 1926, this time to a remote area of the Upper Rogue River, where they lived for ten years. These were the Depression years, and this was where Wally and his two brothers, Bob and Dan, and later their baby sister Mary Ann learned about "roughing it." The boys attended the one-room Laurelhurst elementary school and later entered high school in the small mountain town of Prospect. In later life Wally was proud of his hillbilly background and recorded his reminiscences in the first of four books written in retirement. Wally enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 and served for three years during World War II. He spent nine months in the Pacific Theatre, where he was assigned as an armorer-gunner on A-20 attack bombers. After his discharge he attended Victoria College and the University of Washington, then obtained employment at Boeing, where he worked for 25 years in various administrative roles. Early in this period, while working in Contracts, he met and married Betty Martin, his loving wife of 53 years. Wally and Betty joined John Knox Presbyterian Church in 1962 and remained active members there except for an eighteen month period in 1974-75, when they lived in Ashland, Oregon. Wally taught Sunday school classes, served on the Deacon Board and the Session and also on Presbytery, Synod and General Assembly committees. After early retirement from Boeing in 1974, Wally launched his own business, offering services in technical and promotional writing and editing, which he continued until 1992. This gave him time for traveling with Betty, writing and pursuing other interests such as fishing, gardening and reading. He became an avid student of history and government. Surviving are his wife Betty, daughter Laurie (Rob) Semke, grandson Rand (Ivey) Semke, granddaughter Kirstin (Chris) Hobday and great-granddaughters Grace and Audrey Hobday. Services will be at John Knox Presbyterian Church, 109 SW Normandy Road, on May 10th at 11:00 a.m.
