Elmer Mattison Obituary

Elmer Richard Mattison, 86, known as Red to his friends, went to be with our Heavenly Father, Saturday, October 29, 2011, at Jefferson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Red was born July 16, 1925, in White Lake, New York. He was a graduate of Monticello High School and Louisiana State University (LSU). After two years at LSU, he served two years in the U.S. Navy, during World War II. Red always said that President Truman saved his life, and every time he put his Navy uniform on he was so proud. After discharge from the Navy, he returned to LSU, graduating in 1948 as a Chemical Engineer. He joined Mobil Oil Corporation in Beaumont, Texas. During his career with Mobil, he was the head of Process Engineering in Mobil Europe. After returning to the states, he held various managerial positions with Mobil and retired in 1989, after 41 years of service. He was a member of AICHE, NPRA, United Methodist Men, worked with Junior Achievement, and a member of the Kitchen Class at Wesley United Methodist Church. Red and his wife, Barbara, have fond memories of their many travels, and their beach home at Crystal Beach, Port Bolivar, Texas. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Francis Mattison; parents, Arthur and Artenius Mattison; and brother, John Mattison. Red is survived by his wife, Barbara JoJo Warren Mattison; his six children: sons, Scott Mattison of Anchorage, Alaska, Richard Mattison and wife, Susan of Ivanhoe, Texas, Johnny Ahysen of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Donny Ahysen and wife, Jami, of Bay City, Texas, David Ahysen of Beaumont; and daughter, Robyn Ahysen Peurifoy and husband, Mike, of Beaumont; grandchildren: Matt Mattison of Anchorage, Alaska, Annie Dybsetter and husband, Jarrod, of South St. Paul, Minnesota, Kristina Bielecki and husband, Adam, of Allen Texas, Amanda Bruso and husband, Joe, of Howe, Texas, John David J.D. (Eagle Scout) and wife, Melinda, of Hempstead, Texas, Chris Peurifoy (U.S. Navy) and wife, Jennifer, of San Diego, California, Chris Holliday and wife, Savannah, of Bay City, Texas, Jeremy Holliday of Corpus Christi, Texas, Brianne Martinez and husband, Nelson, of Bay City, Texas, and James Reid Adams (Eagle Scout) of Corpus Christi, Texas; great-grandchildren: Jadyn and Jordyn Dybsetter, Carter and Mattie Grace Bielecki, Brody Bruso, Mary Morgan Morgie Ahysen, Nick and Elena Peurifoy, Tayler and Noah Martinez, C. J., Aidan, Olivia, and Paisley Holliday, Desaray and Raymond Milligan, and Derrek Stone; brothers-in-law, Dr. J. Donald Warren, Jr. and wife, Judith Johnston, of Connecticut, Pat Warren and wife, Judi, of Trophy Club, Texas; sister-in-law Juanita Mattison and her daughters, Nan Jacobs and Victoria Pollien of New York; and several other nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a special thanks to three angels on earth, who took care of Red at various times during his illnesses, Shirley Rolax, Mae Paul, and Regina Darkins, as well as the doctors and nurses at Methodist Hospital in Houston, and the wonderful staff at Jefferson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Red wanted to mention his Houston doctors that became more like personal friends and family over the years: Dr. Norman Berkman, Dr. David Samuels, Dr. Stewart Dobbs, Dr. William Guerriero, Dr. Sam Weber, and Dr. William Quale. All of his friends were very dear to him, but others that he wanted to let know were special to him were Mark Cannon, Nancy Vicknair, Lou Ann Mattison, Shanna Taylor, Dr. Brad and Bridget Walker, Paul Behrens, Marian Godwin, Gene and Betty Roe, and all of his beach friends. His funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 5, 2011, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 3810 North Major Drive, Beaumont, with Military Honors, under the direction of Broussard's, 1605 North Major Drive, Beaumont. There will be a reception following his service at the church. As honorary pallbearers, Red named the members of the Kitchen Class at Wesley United Methodist Church, along with Johnny Ahysen, Donny Ahysen, David Ahysen, Mike Peurifoy, J. D. Ahysen, and Matt Mattison. A gathering of his family and friends will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Friday, November 4, 2011, at Broussard's. There will not be any graveside services for Red. The family would like to give special thanks to the many members of Wesley and friends for their prayers, support, visits, cards, and meals during all of his illnesses. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be sent to Wesley United Methodist Church, Boy Scout Fund - Troop 65, 3810 North Major Drive, Beaumont, Texas 77713.
