THOMAS GREEN Obituary

GREEN, Thomas George Age 83, a retired architect of Boston, Provincetown and York, Maine, died on Monday, May 18, 2015 at Durgin Pines Nursing Facility in York, following a long and valiant battle against Parkinson's Disease and Alzheimer's. Mr. Green was born in Ackley, Iowa, on July 12, 1931, the son of Thomas and Marie Green. He graduated from University of Chicago with a B. Divinity in 1955 and was ordained in the United Church of Christ. Green received a Master's Degree in Architecture from Yale University in 1959 and joined Architects Collaborative as an associate. He became a partner and principal at Benjamin Thompson & Associates in Cambridge, Massachusetts from 1966 until 1980. While there, Green helped design many well-known buildings including the iconic Design Research Building in Cambridge, the Greylock Residential Houses at Williams College, the Quincy Market/Faneuil Hall Marketplace, the Harvard School of Education Library, and the music building at Amherst College. Internationally, Mr. Green's designs range as far away as Abu Dhabi; Cairo; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Dublin, Ireland. Green was an Eliel Saarinsen Traveling Fellow, Yale University, in 1960, a visiting critic at Harvard Graduate School of Design in 1981, and a Visiting Design Critic at Yale University School of Architecture in 1983-84. A member of the Architects Fellowship, the Boston Society of Architects, and the Boston Landmarks Commission from 1996-2005. He served on the boards of Harleston Parker Medal Committee, the Rotch Traveling Fellowship Committee, the Boston Zoning Commission, the Architectural Advisory Panel for the United Church of Christ, and the board of directors of the Auburn Theological Seminary. Mr. Green's architectural projects include the American Multi-Cinema, 42nd Street, New York, New York; the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, DC; Queen's Square, Brampton, Ontario; Mercado de Abasto, Buenos Aires, Argentina; Herzlia Marina, Tel-Aviv, Israel; Prudential Center Redevelopment, Boston; Spitalfields Development, London, England; Navy Pier, Chicago, Illinois; Nokendai, Yokohama, Japan; Harumi 1-Chome Waterfront, Tokyo, Japan; Schouwburgplein, Rotterdam, Netherlands; Custom House Docks, Dublin, Ireland; Harborplace, Baltimore, Maryland; New York University School of Law, New York; Al Ain, United Arab Emirates; Crosby Hall, Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire; IBM, Burlington, Vermont; Berkshire Community College, Pittsfield, Massachusetts; and St. Paul Academy/Summit School, St. Paul, Minnesota. Mr. Green leaves his beloved husband of 32 years, David Simpson of York, Maine. Simpson and Green were married in their Beacon Hill home in May, 2004. Mr. Green leaves as well his brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Heidi Green, of New York; his sister and brother-in-law, John and Gretchen Bridgeman, of Texas; his niece, Julie Ruper and husband Stephen; his nephew, Chuck Bridgeman and his wife, Kristy; his nephew, Jim Bridgeman and his wife Ann; and many grand nephews and nieces. A private interment will be held at Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and a celebration of Green's life will be held later this summer.
