Edward Marquand Obituary

Edward Bruce Marquand, 85, of Arnold died peacefully August 12 of cancer at the John and Arloine Mandrin Inpatient Care Center in Harwood. Ed was born September 27, 1927 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He spent his early years in Pachuca, Mexico where his family lived in the 1930's and early 1940's. He served in the U.S. Army as a Private First Class, stationed in Korea, and graduated from Yale University in 1952. He married Barbara Spiller in 1951. They started their family in Los Angeles, CA where he worked for ALCOA. Ed's side business ventures at that time included a dive shop and the fabrication of a small submarine. He was an avid SCUBA diver. Ed was transferred to Washington, D. C. in 1969, lost his wife in 1970, and wed Nancy Smith Bourquin in 1971. He later worked for Westinghouse Underwater Equipment and founded The Severn Group. He described his happiest times as those on the "Happy Hour," a cabin cruiser Ed enjoyed piloting in the Pacific off of Southern California and through the Chesapeake Bay. He was preceded in death by his stepson, Robert Bourquin, who died in 1997. Ed is survived by his wife, Nancy; his sons, Edward and Michael Marquand; his stepson, Douglas Bourquin and his wife, Joan; four grandchildren, Michael and Julie Marquand, and Megan and Hannah Bourquin; and many relatives on both coasts. No service is planned. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake in Edward's name.

I too met Ed while out walking my dog Rocky along the hill on Andrew Hill Road. Rocky was a small black lovable Lhasa Apso. Ed at the time had an immense Airedale named Maggie who to me and my dog appeared to be as big as a loin. Immediately upon spotting he and his "pup" coming down the hill in our direction , I retreated to the opposite side of the street. As we past in opposite directions was the moment that I first personally met this very gentle man who always seemed to wear a warm hearted smile. He told me from a distance that his huge dog was actually very friendly and invited me to bring my pup closer. He was correct about Maggie, ya see Maggie actually had adopted Ed's personality. She in fact was a gentle and warm hearted as her master, so and for four years, Ed and I and Maggie and Rocky often walked together on the fairways of Bay Hills while Ed and his beloved Maggie pursued two of Ed's favorite hobbies, namely walking his dog and finding lost golf balls. Ed was a good, gentle, and lighthearted man and men such as he will remain in our hearts as cherished memories forever. Nancy may you and your family find Comfort and Peace in the Memory of his always gracious warm hearted, happy go lucky spirit.

Dear Nancy, my deepest sympathy to you and your family. I do remember all the times you and Ed came into Dr. Boulier's office when I worked them. He was always a very kind man and was wonderful to talk you. May God give your peace and strength during this difficult time.

I will truly miss my morning and evening conversations with Mr. Ed while we were both walking our dogs. I'll never forget his contagious laugh and kind words. May he forever rest in peace and may his family find solace in the fact that he will be remembered fondly by all that knew him. God Bless.
