Richard Dayhoff Obituary

NEW OXFORD Richard W. "Gus" Dayhoff, 80, died Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at his residence with his family by his side. He was the husband of the late Mae A. (Kuykendall) Dayhoff, who died March 2, 2005. Richard was born November 29, 1934 in Gettysburg, the son of the late Raymond W. and Jennie (Sowers) Dayhoff. Richard was a 1953 graduate of Gettysburg High School, where he played on the 1951 undefeated football team, which was the first at Gettysburg High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956 and the U.S. Navy from 1957 until 1961. Richard was a member the Gettysburg Eagles, Gettysburg, the Adams County Sports Hall of Fame, and was a life member of the East Berlin V.F.W and the American Legion, Gettysburg. He retired from J.E. Baker in York after 26 years of service, enjoyed attending high school football games, and was an avid horse racing fan who made frequent trips to the horseracing track at Charlestown, W.Va. Richard is survived by four sons, Mike E. Dayhoff and his wife, Judy of New Oxford, Randall E. Slonaker and his wife, Pat of New Oxford, Paul E. Slonaker and his wife, Vicky of Abbottstown and Gary L. Slonaker and his wife, Joan of New Oxford; ten grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, and four sisters, Naomi Redding of Md., Dorothy Jacobs of Abbottstown, Freda Hulton of Gettysburg, and Ramona White of N.J.. He was predeceased by two brothers, Harold "Bud" Dayhoff and Raymond "Junior" Dayhoff; and a sister, Nancy Clapp. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 13, 2015 at 9:30 a.m. at the Feiser Funeral Home, Inc, 302 Lincolnway West, New Oxford, with the Rev. Cynthia A. Chambers officiating. Burial will be in the New Oxford Cemetery. A viewing will be held on Thursday at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Serving as pallbearers will be Jeremy Dayhoff, Kyle Dayhoff, Joe Slonaker, Randy Slonaker, II, Eric Slonaker and Christine Slonaker. Military honors will be provided by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice & Community Care, PO Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604.
