John Russell Bensen, Sr. (J.R.) passed away on January 26, 2014 after a brief illness. He was born August 30, 1920 in Grant, Fla., to Atley and Clara Bensen. He graduated from Melbourne High School class of 1938. J.R. served in the U.S. Navy during WWII

He was aboard the USS Lexington in the battle of the Coral Sea where the ship was sunk. He also served on the USS Alabama and was a plank holder. He graduated from Tulane University with an Engineering degree with the Navy V-12 program. He received his commission as an officer and served aboard the USS Kent until the end of the war. J. R. then began his career with Florida Power & Light in 1947 in Miami, Fla. where he met his true love and wife of 64 years Ann Marie Raywood. After 35+ years with FP&L, he retired and he and Ann travelled the world for the next 30 years. He is survived by his wife Ann, sons John R. Bensen Jr. (Debbie), and Michael Louis Bensen. He has four granddaughters and one great-granddaughter. In Lieu of flowers, donations to any of J.R.'s favorite charities; Habitat for Humanity, Nature Conservancy.
