Richard Kernagis Obituary

Richard Anthony Kernagis

On January 6, 2016, Richard Anthony Kernagis, a devoted father and grandfather, passed away peacefully in Tampa, FL, surrounded by his loving family. Always strong in spirit, he fought a valiant battle against leukemia.

Richard will be greatly missed by his son, Richard Michael; daughters Crystal and Lily; former spouse, Rocio; Daughter-in-law, Jennifer; sons-in-law, James and David; grandchildren, Ava, Serena, Walter, Miles, and Maxx; brothers Bob and Larry; sisters Lori, Pat, and Geri; as well as by extended family members and friends.

Richard was born in Chicago in 1943, and was raised there along with his six brothers and sisters. After working oversees for several years, he moved to Ohio, married Rocio, and had three children. In 1978, they moved to Merritt Island, Florida. In 1997, he retired from a career in communications engineering. He had worked for companies such as North Electric in Galion, Ohio, ITT at Kennedy Space Center, FL, Lockheed Martin in Orlando FL, and Computer Sciences Raytheon at Patrick Air Force Base, FL. Richard enjoyed life and spent his years as a wonderful, giving, and caring father, husband, brother, uncle, grandfather, and friend. He was an avid golfer and also enjoyed cheering for his favorite sports teams, including the Florida Gators. Gentle in spirit and kind-hearted, he always had a smile on his face and anyone who knew him was better for it.

A Memorial Service will be held at Divine Mercy Catholic Church on Friday January 15th at 1:00 p.m. with a reception to follow at his family's home at 170 Seabreeze Circle, Merritt Island, FL. Donations in his honor may be made to The Leukemia And Lymphoma Society at donate.lls.org.

Rich, Rich, Rich....

I wish I had taken the time to find out what was going on. But, my friend, you didn't seem to want to talk about your problems. So, I didn't push things. Now I know. And I want you to know you will be missed. Things have been chaotic on this end. I am now in Washington. Am married. I really wish I could have made it back to FL one more time. But, everything is better. No more meds. No more pain. I know you know you are missed. You are indeed.

Rich, Rich, Rich.....

There has been a lot of water under the bridge on this end. I wondered why you didn't respond to emails. Now I know. You will be missed my friend. FYI, I bailed out of Dallas and moved to Washington. You don't want to know why. Am now married.

I will miss your smile. I will miss your humor. But, my friend, I got to enjoy both. I just wish I could have seen you just one more time. Don't we all.

I'm having one for you.

Audios mi amigo.

To Dick's family,
We just learned of Dick's passing yesterday and are broken hearted. We have been friends for many years. Sam and Dick worked together at both North Electric and in Florida. We will miss him so much. With his big heart and big smile he was one of the good guys. Our thoughts and prays are with you.

My husband and I have known Rich for at least 10 years. We met Rich when we noticed that he walked around our neighborhood each evening around dinner time. Whenever we ran into him, he was genuinely interested in our lives and always had a kind word. We will miss him and his smile. Pam & Rich DeKany

Dear Family,

I'm so sorry to hear that Rich passed away. I spoke to him a month ago and he told me of his illness. He seemed at peace with his condition and was so grateful that his family was there to help him. He has been in my prayers ever since. I'll pray that God comfort you in the days ahead.
