DORIS SIEGEL Obituary

Doris Siegel passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, November 2, 2017. Doris was born in Germany, and was the daughter of Irene and Gustav. Doris was wife of Abraham (deceased); and sister to Hans (deceased), and Gudi (deceased). She was mother to Deborah and Joshua; and grandmother to Ellie. In 1966, Doris joined the Dance Department at University of California, Los Angeles, working with a team of remarkable women leading a new and exciting field of artistic expression. Doris was a full Professor of Dance at the University. She lit and designed every UCLA Dance Company performance for over 20 years. She was an active member of Temple Beth Israel and was especially proud of Ellie having her Bat Mitzvah there in 2016. A special thank you to Tissie for her care and concern over the last ten years. Aleha HaShalom.

We just discovered that Doris had passed in 2017. Words can't express our heartbreak. She and Abe were good friends--I met Doris in the Jewish Literature class I taught for many years at Leo Baeck temple in West L.A., , and our friendship grew from there. The Siegels loved going to the Ojai Music Festival, and persuaded us to join them, which we did for many years, and still attend and support something that became a defining moment in our lives. We were blessed to know Doris and Abe.

Doris was a wonderful, caring woman. With all her accomplishments, she was still humble. I recall many parties and dinners at her house, always elegant and upbeat. She supported the arts and attended as many concerts and plays as she could. I miss her delightful wit and her powerful presence.

Doris was an elegant woman and good friend. Despite severe health issues, she hosted dinners and parties, attended concerts, plays, and Osher classes, and remained active until the very end. Her spirit will live on in the groups she supported and helped create.
