Debabrata Ghosh Obituary

Dr. Debabrata Ghosh Dr. Debabrata Ghosh, Professor of Biology, passed away at his home in Houston, Texas on April 29, 2014 surrounded by those closest to him. He was 80.
Dr. Ghosh graduated from the University of Calcutta, Calcutta, India with a B.S. degree in 1956. He then moved to the United States and obtained a Masters Degree in Plant Physiology and Chemistry and a Ph.D degree in Plant Physiology and Biochemistry from Texas A&M University, College Station. He completed his postdoctoral training at the University of Texas, Austin before joining Texas Southern University in 1966.
His contributions included teaching, research, publications, awards, and grants during his 42 years of tenure at Texas Southern University.
In 1968 he was awarded the Robert A. Welch Foundation Grant. In 1972 he was awarded the first NBRS grant amounting to 5 million dollars to Texas Southern University. Dr. Ghosh mentored and guided the Master of Science theses of 35 graduate students from the TSU Department of Biology. Dr. Ghosh served as the chair of the Department of Biology from 1998 through 2004.
Beyond the biological sciences, he had many other scientific interests such as Quantum Mechanics and Theoretical Physics. He co-authored a scientific paper entitled "molecular mechanism of manganese exposure-induced dopaminergic toxicity" in the Brain Research Bulletin.
He was not only a scientist, teacher, and mentor, but also a true friend in having a profound effect on those closest to him. He was an avid reader of the New York Times and spent his retirement years in the pursuit and sharing of his knowledge, writing, philately, gardening, aviculture, and pets (Nightingale and Maggie). His intelligence, humor, and wit will truly be missed by his friends.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, May 7th 2014, at Winford Funeral Home, 8514 Tybor Dr, Houston, TX 77074 at 10:00am.

He was my maternal grandfather.He was very close to us and still he is in the deep of my heart.we all r missing him a lot.we never forget him.he will always be remaining and stay with us.we r also doing an obituary here in India. May his soul in rest & peace.

The passing of a wonderful man. I met Dr. Gosh in 2000 while he was chair of the Departmentof Biology - I listened to stories of his scientific exploits. Memorable jokes and laughs. Rest in peace Dr. Ghosh

I was a student in the biology dept and had the pleasure of being a student of Dr. Ghosh, a lab. asst and he honored me by serving on my committee for my masters degree. he was always helpful to me as well as others and his jokes well they were more meaningful than funny. He was super and surely a great man to all.
