John Monroe Obituary

Monroe, John Francis, Jr. John faithfully entered into the fullness of Eternal Life on Saturday, February 22, 2014, at the age of 87. Beloved husband of Rosemary (nee Dieckelman) for 56 years. Proud and loving father of Maryrose, John III, Robert, Marygrace, and the late Christopher. Caring grandfather to Philip, Benjamin and Aimee. Dear brother of Margaret Zunick and the late Mary Ellen Schmitz. John graduated from Holy Rosary, Marquette University High School, Virginia Military Institute, Marquette University and Harvard Law School. He worked in Washington DC, a law clerk to Judge Tamm, United States District Court, before moving to New York. He then returned to Milwaukee to join his father at family owned Braun Monroe and Co. which was later acquired by Wells Fargo Advisors of which John dedicated 60 years of his life as an investment advisor. John was well known for his involvement and philanthropic activities. He passionately was involved in numerous charities, and sponsored several scholarships at Marquette University. He also was deeply involved with and had a passion for the arts, serving on the Board of the Fine Arts Society, among many others. He was a member of the Knights of Malta and Holy Sepulcher as well as being a long standing member of St. Robert Parish. Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 1, at Three Holy Women Holy Rosary Church, where John was baptized, (2011 N. Oakland Ave., Milwaukee) from 9:30 AM until 11:30 AM, with Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 11:30 AM. Interment will be private at Holy Cross Cemetery. In loving memory of John, donations in his name appreciated to Marquette University High School, Scholarship Fund, 3401 W. Wisconsin Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53208 or the John F. and Miriam Monroe, Sr. Scholarship Fund established at Marquette University, 1250 W. Wisconsin Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53233. "I am a member of the Church established by Jesus Christ. Sharing his concern for the sick, the poor and the needy has been an important part of my life. Primarily acting out my obligation to Christ by giving generously to those in need and continuously praying for them." John Monroe

I have many find memories of my "other" father, since I virtually lived in the Monroe home during my high school years. Mr. Monroe was elegant, smart, distinguished, and learned. As a teenager, I mostly valued his warmth and humor. As an adult, I appreciate all the rest. I will miss him often and deeply.

On behalf of the Brennan family, we send our love and heartfelt sympathy to the entire Monroe family. We were so sorry to hear of the loss of "Uncle Johnny" as we called him. What a wonderful and charming man! Our family was overwhelmed and touched by the gift of Rosemary & Johnny's presence at our dad's funeral in Savannah, Georgia last March. We had such a wonderful visit with them, and they told us so many wonderful & funny family stories about the "Good Old Days" in Milwaukee. Their visit is a gift we'll cherish forever. We are so sad that we will not be able to visit with Uncle Johnny, because we had seriously talked about visiting Rosemary & Johnny in Milwaukee this year. However, Mary, Tom & I look forward to seeing the rest of the Monroe family at the funeral this weekend.
Love,
Julie Brennan
(& the entire Brennan family)
