Ernest Eckert
Ernest Eckert, 82, of Lehighton, died Monday, June 4, 2007, at Blue Mountain Health Systems Gnaden Huetten Campus, Lehighton. He was the husband of Elaine (Long) Eckert for 59 years. Born in Lehighton, he was the son of the late Jerry and Lillie (Hess) Eckert. He was a 1942 graduate of Lehighton Area High School and a graduate of Moravian College with a bachelors degree in mathematics and physics, and also received a masters degree in education from Lehigh University. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the USS Ira Jeffery in the Pacific and Atlantic theaters as a radar man. Mr. Eckert was a mathematics teacher for the Lehighton and Parkland school districts, financial advisor for the former Hacketts Associates and owner of the Lehighton News Agency from 1965 to 1979. He was a member of Christ Evangelical Free Church, Mahoning Valley, and served on various committees. He was a member of the Lehighton Mens Band for many years as a trombone player, a member of Johnny Kresges Band and a past member of Lehighton American Legion Post 314. Survivors: Wife; son, Brian, husband of Sherri Eckert of Lehighton; daughters, Dianne, wife of Barry Palmer of Berwick, Karen, wife of David Fuge of Landisville, Noreen, wife of George Fisher of Danville; sister, Marguerite Balliet of Mount Laurel, N.J.; 10 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren. Services: Noon Thursday, June 7, 2007, Christ Evangelical Free Church, 2420 Blakeslee Blvd. West, Mahoning Valley. Call 11 a.m. to noon Thursday at the church. Committal Service with military honors will follow at Lehighton Cemetery. Schaeffer Funeral Home, Lehighton, is in charge of the arrangements.
