Jon Coutchie Obituary

Coutchie, Jon Steven, was born on October 2, 1971 and passed away on September 21, 2013 at the age of 41. Jon was born in Tucson, Arizona and raised in Orange County, CA where he graduated from Laguna Hills High School in 1989.

After the September 11th terrorist attacks, Jon enlisted in the military and became an Army Ranger. He served his country from 2003-2007 and completed tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

After being honorably discharged from the Army, Jon applied for a part-time Jailer position at the Laguna Beach Police Department. He quickly showed great enthusiasm for his job and excelled with each assignment. Seeing his great potential, the Police Department sponsored him through the Goldenwest Police Academy in 2008. Jon successfully completed this training in March of 2009 and was immediately sworn in as a Laguna Beach Police Officer.

Jon showed a passion for traffic issues and displayed an early expertise in accident investigation. Following this interest, Jon applied and was selected for one of the coveted Motor Officer positions in March of 2013.

On the evening of Jon's death, he was traveling northbound on Coast Highway in an attempt to locate a vehicle which had eluded another officer. While looking for the speeding vehicle, Jon was involved in a collision with a Chevrolet pickup truck in the intersection with Cleo Street.

After the arriving officers saw that Jon had succumbed to his injuries, one of them ran into a local Ralph's Market and grabbed an American Flag. Jon's body was draped in that American Flag as an honor to his sacrifice as an Army Ranger and Laguna Beach Police Officer.

We will forever miss and love Jon at the Police Department and will grieve along with his family and the citizens of this community.

Jon is survived by his mother, Luciana Coutchie; his father, Robert Coutchie; his brother, Rob Coutchie; his step-mother, Mikki Coutchie; his step-sister, Katrina Green; and his loving girlfriend, Tara Young.

To the family of Jon Coutchie,
I was working with Jon during 9/11 and on that day he promised to enlist. A year later he was training to become an army ranger. After he got out of the army he told me that he had become a police officer and how much he loved his job.
Jon was and will always be an important person in my life. I was so sorry to hear about his passing, I had hoped that we would meet again someday.
Perhaps we still will.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Jon Steven Coutchie our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Jon. And to Jon it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during Operations Irai and Enduring Freedoms while serving in the U.S. Army. Jon, we honor the supreme sacrifice you made while serving as a Laugna Beach Police Officer. You are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. You upheld the finest qualities of an American patriot warrior: courage, commitment, Generosity, sacrifice, love and devotion to family and country. You were a true friend. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,261 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion and the 233 veterans of VFW Post 2238 in Shreveport, Louisiana, we extend our sympathies and our condolences to Jon's family and loved ones.

We did not know Jon Steven, but I went to high school with his Dad, Bob. Our hearts and prayer go out to Bob and his family. Our son Justin also served in Afganistan, and worked in a large city Police Department upon return from active duty. Our son is the same as age as Jon Steven. These young men serve our Country with pride and dignity....they are the true heros of this country. May God find a special place for him.
Bob Coutchie you are in our prayers.
