Mark Thompson Obituary

Mark D. Thompson

Mark Thompson, age 50, passed away at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay on Friday, January 17, 2014, following a courageous battle with cancer. Mark was born in Green Bay on August 23, 1963, son of the late Marshall Thompson and Doris (Hansen) Thompson who still resides in Green Bay. Mark was a 1982 graduate of the Ashwaubenon High School, and received a degree from Carroll College in chemistry, and a degree from UW-Green Bay in computer science. After college, he served in the Army National Guard for four years. Mark held a variety of jobs, but most will remember Mark for his years of employment at ShopKo and his most recent work in IT at Bellin Hospital.

Mark had a variety of interests. As a singer, he was a member of the church choir at the various churches he attended over the years, and was recently a member of newVoices. He loved history, especially war history, and was an avid player of strategy games. He enjoyed reading fantasy novels, Star Trek, and going to the Rennaisance Faire, where he was introduced to his future wife, Marcia. The couple married in Appleton on May 6, 2000.

He is survived by his loving wife: Marcia Thompson of Appleton; their two sons: Matthew and Nathan Thompson; his mother: Doris Thompson of Green Bay; a sister: Karen (John) Stangel of Kaukauna; his in-laws: Donald and Joyous Block of Appleton; Marcia's siblings: Jeff (Cheri) Block of Rochester, Minnesota; Karil (Todd) Simmerman of Darboy; and Janet (Craig) Schultz of Appleton; his special nieces and nephews: Kirstin and Tyler Stangel; Jena and Brittney Block; Kimberly and Alexandra Coenen; Quest Simmerman; Jessica and Christopher Plamann; and Alexis and Alicia Schultz; a great-niece: Olivia Plamann; an aunt: Gladys (Eugene) Nickodem of Green Bay; and a cousin: Bob Nickodem. Mark was preceded in death by his father: Marshall Thompson; and his grandparents: Wilbur and Myrtle Hansen and Isaac and Rachael Thompson.

A funeral service for Mark will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, January 20, 2014 at GOOD SHEPHERD LUTHERAN CHURCH, 2220 E. College Avenue in Appleton. Rev. Timothy Seabaugh and Rev. Martin Koeller will officiate. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Wichmann Funeral Home, Tri County Chapel, on Sunday afternoon from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM, and again at the church on Monday morning from 9:00 AM until the time of the service.
