Daniel San Miguel Obituary
Daniel G. San Miguel, Jr. went home to the Lord on June 21, 2013. He was born on May 29, 1931 in San Antonio, Texas, to Daniel and Velia San Miguel. He is predeceased by his parents, beloved brother Robert San Miguel, daughter-in-law Amada San Miguel, and great-grandson Rex Neal Van de Putte. Daniel grew up around the old Mercado area of San Antonio where his father owned "La Botica Guadalupana" on Produce Row in what is now Market Square. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and attended St. Mary's University. In his junior year he entered and won a national poetry contest following the advice of his mentor, Bro. Anthony Frederick SM. He joined the United States Army during the Korean War, served honorably, and became a proud veteran. Among his other credits, Daniel taught English and coached in the Edgewood ISD, was Director of the City of San Antonio Model Cities Program, was a Bexar County Sheriff Deputy Badge #113, was an investigator for District Attorney James Barlow and for the Bexar County Coroner's Office. He was a highly regarded private investigator for over 20 years working with a number of prestigious law firms and clients. He also volunteered actively as his children's CYO baseball, track, and Pony league football coach. He later extended his community service working on political campaigns, doing poetry readings and inspirational talks, and participating in veteran's events. He was a treasured and frequent guest at Harmony Schools where he recited poetry and read to the students about U.S. History, the military and great American leaders. In 2004 he published "The Winter of My Years," a collection of 18 autobiographical poems. In the book's title poem, he wrote: "I have no answers, no regrets / only the experience of life and memories." In 2007, La Prensa presented him with the Hispanic Heritage Award in Literary Arts. He was also awarded a Fulbright-Hays Grant. He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Barbara San Miguel and sisters-in-law Mary Louise San Miguel and Elanora Hurst and brother-in-law Sydney Spencer; his children, State Senator Leticia Van de Putte and her husband Pete, Daniel San Miguel III, Annabelle Garcia and her husband Federal Judge Orlando Garcia, Rosanne Valenzuela and her husband Pastor John Valenzuela of Community Bible Church, Roland San Miguel and wife Cindy and their mother Belle San Miguel Ortiz; his grand-children Dr. Nichole Van de Putte-Stiles and her husband Jason Stiles, Vanessa Van de Putte, Henry P. Van de Putte III and wife Rena, Gregory Van de Putte and his wife Samantha Isaacs, Isabella Van de Putte, Paul Van de Putte, Andrea Gonzales, Daniel San Miguel IV, Adriana San Miguel, Angela San Miguel, Yvonne Valenzuela, Moses Valenzuela, Megan Valenzuela, Brian Valenzuela, Timothy Valenzuela, Sean Valenzuela, Juan Rolando San Miguel, Alejandro San Miguel; and great-grandchildren Julian, Jove, and Marlo Stiles, Elliot Taylor, and Asher Van de Putte. Visitation will be at Porter Loring Mortuary, 1101 McCullough beginning at 4:00 PM on Monday.

Daniel was the first boy to ask me out after I started to Jefferson High. He was very sweet and very shy. So shy that he had his brother (Bobby) stop me in the hall to ask me to a movie for him. Danny was standing against a well watching and sort of smiling.
He used to come up to the fence when I was swimming and I would get out of the water and we would talk.
I was sad to hear of his death and to find that Bobby was also gone. But, I was so happy to see that he had a wonderful family and a good and successful life.
The last name of his wife was not in the obituary so I do not know if I knew her. Probably not though as I was a very shy kid and rarely spoke to anyone. Just walked in the door of Jeff and went to class and then left for my job. Did not know but a small handful of people at the school ever.
Just wanted to leave my goodbye to Danny and to express my sadness. He was one of the few that I really ever spoke to at school.

Leticia, Pete and the San Miguel Family...There will never be enough words to convey the sense of loss you all feel. The peace comes in knowing the treasure your Father was to so many and the amount of people he touched. My Grandfather Juan Sauceda(the Raspa con nieve man at Market Square back in the day)had his ties with the San Miguel family through their long time connection at Market Square. My Mother grew up in the same era and generation as your Father and may very well have known him well. The lessons in life and love we learned from our Grandparents' and parents' generation continue to live on in all of us and our children and grandchildren. You were blessed to have had such a loving Father, but he was equally blessed to have brought up such a loving Family. His legacy lives on in all of you. To the family of Mr. San Miguel, my deepest condolences to all of you. I met Mr. San Miguel a couple of times when I made calls to the home. He was kind, gracious & a very proud man. Just a couple of months ago, He gave me an army memorial bracelet when I told him my son was stationed in Afghanistan. He said he would keep my son in thought & prayer. I was truly touched by this. I thought of him often & was saddened to hear of his passing & I hope these words will be of some comfort to you all.
