"Rob," as he was known to all of his friends and family, was a rock -- a real salt of the earth, who was never afraid to break a sweat for those he cared for and strangers alike. Rob was the guy you called in the middle of the night when your car broke down. Rob was the guy you asked for advice when you needed to buy a new furnace or water heater, and Rob was the guy who would help you carry it down the stairs and install it. Rob was a 1986 graduate of Penn High School. He loved cheering on the University of Michigan football team, the Miami Dolphins, and NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon. He worked at Koontz Wagner Electric and AM General. Rob was especially proud of a letter he received from an American soldier thanking him for the armor Rob had helped install on the Humvee that had saved the soldier's life. Rob was an avid pool player and computer whiz, and he enjoyed spending time with close friends Jimmy Clay, Jay Grant, Jeff Parker and Clynt Smith. He was a giant man with a giant heart who was never afraid to let people know what a kind and caring person he could be. His greatest pride in life came from watching his only child, Alyssa, grow into a beautiful young woman and enter college at Indiana University South Bend. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the E. Robert Smith Memorial Fund at PNC Bank. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, at Hahn Funeral Home, 505 West 8th Street in Mishawaka.
