He attended Washington State University and worked for the Washington State Highway Department assigned to surveying and laying out the North Cascade Highway. Jim was drafted by the United States Army in 1967. During this time Jim married his first wife, Linda. He went to basic training at Fort Lewis and went on to NCO training at Fort Benning, Georgia. Jim served in the United States Army as a Sergeant and was stationed at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that separates North and South Korea from 1968 to 1969. Hunting with his sons, Travis and Shawn, camping and fishing with family, riding motorcycles, boating, traveling with family and golfing with friends were some of his favorite past times.
