CHARLES KITTLEMAN Obituary

CHARLES WESLEY KITTLEMAN, JR. McALLEN - Charles Wesley Kittleman, Jr., 87, passed away at home on August 31, 2014, in McAllen, TX. Wes was born in Greenville, MS, on October 16, 1926. He attended Greenville public schools and Andover Phillips Academy where he graduated as an honors student. He attended Yale University and graduated with a double degree in Business Administration and Chemical Engineering. While at Yale, he was captain of the varsity tennis team, participated in intramural golf, and joined Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He later attended Southern Methodist University and earned a Master's Degree in Educational Administration. After college graduation, Wes worked for ten years in every phase of his family owned wholesale grocery business. He moved to Greenwood, MS, where he met Jane Boring, and the two married in September 1951. They later moved to Dallas, TX. After a few years, Wes left the food industry to work at Greenhill School, a private preparatory school, as their business manager. It was at Greenhill that Wes discovered his love of teaching, and a life-long dedication to student learning began. In 1963, he requested leave from the administrative duties to devote full time to teaching math and developing the tennis program. In 1965, he became Head of the Math Department and later Director of Admissions. He devoted his years at Greenhill to encouraging students and teachers to strive for excellence. He was a loving and devoted father and teacher to his own sons, and he valued the years with his three sons who were students at Greenhill. In 1983, Wes retired from teaching, and he and Jane moved to McAllen, TX. He enjoyed playing golf and tennis. He earned the reputation of a highly respected and valued member of First United Methodist Church where he taught Bible studies, Sunday school classes, served on church committees, and led prayer groups. He touched the life of every church member who knew him. Wes and Jane appreciated the many years of exploring and traveling together across the United States. During his retirement years, Wes continued teaching math. For thirty years, he tutored math in his home to many students, working with them tirelessly until they understood and excelled at math. Wes is preceded in death by his parents, Eloise Taylor Kittleman and Charles Wesley Kittleman, Sr.; and one brother, Marley Kittleman. Wes is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Jane; and two brothers, Edmund Taylor Kittleman and William Buxton Kittleman; his sons, Charles Wesley Kittleman, III, (Patsy), William Thomas Kittleman, (Linda), and John Wesley Kittleman (Julie); and grandchildren, Sarah Jane Kittleman, Robert Wesley Kittleman, William Wellman Kittleman, Sarah Rodriguez Pratt, Vanessa Olivarez Burge, Carlos Olivarez, Dylan Thomas Kittleman, Cory William Kittleman, Rondel Taylor Kittleman, Elizabeth Wesley Kittleman, James Thomas Kittleman, and Eloise Ann Kittleman. Funeral Services will be held at First United Methodist Church in McAllen on Tuesday, September 2, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. A reception will follow the service. The family suggests memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, P 0. Box 2558, McAllen, TX 78502. Mr. Kittlemen was one of the finest gentlemen I ever knew. He was wise, gentle, supportive, scholarly, honorable and just. His example convicts and guides me even now. He and Mrs. Kittleman were abiding Christian examples that stayed with me long after Greenhill. God bless the family.

He was my mentor and a kind of father figure. I had the privilege of playing varsity tennis under his tutelage. I was terrible at Trig, flunking, and he figured out a project for me to do for extra credit so I could pass and graduate. I will never forget him and his intensity. Love to the family. God's peace, Jane.

Dear Jane,
Please accept my deepest condolences.
Wes taught me what Greenhill was about. He personified the spirit and the meaning of the place. An unforgettable teaching moment: Wes on top of his desk, or standing on his head, illustrating, explaining perhaps a math concept ~I could see him through the glass window, but couldn't hear him. He taught me that effective teaching could take a myriad of guises, no holds barred. A colleague, a friend, a mentor to us all.
Love to you and the "boys."

There is definitely a cloud of sorts through which we can receive information. I believe I accessed it just recently when oddly I recalled Mr. Kittleman 's kind words and great humor. He always gave my sister Cynthia top grades, as she easily grasped the work, but he always noted on the report card that she was able accomplish the class's demands while "sleeping ". This was not the case with me. I watched closely the skirt-like movement of his large pants legs as he paraded before the blackboard with a twinkle in his eye and a smile bordering on outright laughter as he presented problems and solutions to the class. My best to the family.

Wes Kittleman was an enormous influence -- a giant in the lives of many Greenhill students. My brother Ben (Mr. Kittleman called him "Gentle Ben") went on to be a mathematics major at Duke largely because of Mr. Kittleman's learned and witty approach to the world of numbers. The "Old Goat," as he called himself with wonderful self-deprecation, brought his signature combination of humor, precision and compassion to the business of making generations of Greenhill students numerate (and proudly so!). I count myself lucky to have been a Kittleman student. He was an inspiring and beloved teacher.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Kittleman in high school. He was such a great teacher! Made math seem so simple and helped me understand it better. I remember him being soo kind and patient. The world has lost a great man. Our loss is heaven's gain.

I came to Greenhill in the summer of 1969. I had always been bad at math thru middle and high school. Mr. Kittleman spent the summer
teaching Algebra 1 with a different style than other teachers . That summer turned my math academics around. I now teach high school math. His impact on me is now an influence to students 45 years later. There have been numerous times thru the years when someone has asked me which teacher had the most influence on me and my answer is always Mr. Kittleman. Rick Hilton 1971

My dearest Jane,
What a marvelous man that Wes was! He enriched my life as he enriched so many others. He made a huge difference in many lives. I know that having Wes to work with Bernard and Helen encouraged and inspired both of them. I know that he will be missed by many, but he had a great run. A few days before Bernard passed away, he called me and told me that it was almost his time and that he was so happy to finally get to know what exactly was on the other side. He said that he had always wanted to know and at last he would get to experience it. He looked forward to crossing over and he left so easily.
Jane, I am thinking of you these days and remembering how much Helen and Bernard loved both of you.
Much love,
Molly Fulton Seeligson

He was my advisor throughout high school and he was a rock and constant support for me. He had a wonderful sense of humor and always helped me to stay positive and work harder. We had the only fun advisory group! I hope his family finds comfort in their loving memories and know how many young people he influenced.

Mr. K will be missed!
It's difficult to know where to begin when writing about the many blessings this man shared with so many fortunate individuals. I owe so much of what I learned early in life and carry still today to Mr. K, as I am sure so many others have as well. Mr. K had a brilliant mind, a huge heart, an uncanny ability to teach, and his motivational skills were personalized to get the most out of the individual he was trying to reach at that particular moment. I smile at the thought of knowing where Mr. K is right now, in the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, imagining the words he is hearing, '...well done!'. Mr. K reminds me of some of my favorite sets of verses, Phillippians 1:21-26 and 1Cor 9:24-27.
Way to go Mr. K, you ran the race and won the prize!

I was in Mr Kittleman's Calculus class in 1977-'78. I have very fond memories, even specific recollections of actual phrases and techniques, some of which I use to teach my own kids.
