Ed was a gentle man. When I first read his name on the credit union bulletin board, I checked with friends to find out if he was OK. I was concerned that he might be a gentleman (his name was Van Allen). As the years of our friendship went by I laughed at caution many times. We sailed for many years in cold-hot, calm-wind storms. Most what I know about sailing I learned from Ed .
One of my early sailing trips with Ed was on the Saint Croix River. As dark came on we headed for home. Ed was in the back steering the boat when I volunteered to go forward to lower the sails. Of course, I knew that the forward (jib)sail should come down first but I released the back main sail by mistake. The main sail has a long metal pole (the boom) at the bottom. It dropped ten feet to the deck hitting Ed on the way-down. Looking up from the pile of sail and ropes, Ed calmly said you should have dropped the other jib.
He was a gentle man. I miss him

I remember meeting Cheryl's Dad many years ago. He was kind, and witty, and made me feel welcome. As a long-time friend of Cheryl, I see her Dad's qualities in her. So his legacy lives on.
