ANNE EWING Obituary

EWING, ANNE D. (ANNE DRAYTON HEUSER RADLOW) Nov. 19, 1930 to April 11, 2011 Beloved by family and friends, Anne was a warm, loving person who used her spunk, intelligence, and organizing ability to make the world a better place. Born in Wytheville, Va. to Fredric Randolph Massillon Heuser and Cora Evelyn Anderson Heuser. At age 20 she joined the civil rights movement in the segregated South. She earned a B.A. in botany at College of William and Mary and M.S. at University of Tennessee. She married Robert Radlow in l957, and bore two children while doing research at Penn State University. Moving to San Diego in 1968, she was a Research Fellow at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and later an Environmental Planner for County of San Diego for 20 years, directing California's largest environmental impact study projects. Through the National Organization for Women (NOW), she forced California schools to eliminate sexism and racism in textbooks, and fiercely challenged the Catholic Church on women's abortion rights. She then founded the San Diego's National Women's Political Caucus (NWPC) in 1978. When her marriage ended in 1980, she chose the name Anne Dungan Ewing from her family tree. Anne was the President of the Torrey Pines Association and San Diego Independent Scholars (1997 - 2000). She was inducted into the San Diego County Women's Hall of Fame (2005). She is survived by her son Andrew Radlow of Orinda, CA and daughter Myra Radlow of Irvine, CA and their collective three children. A celebration of her life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, May 1st, at the UCSD Faculty Club. Memorial gifts may be made to Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest, 1075 Camino del Rio South, San Diego, CA 92108 or at plannedparenthood.org. Please indicate the gift is made in Anne Ewing's memory.

I worked with Anne for many years at DPLU. She was a joy to work with and to call a friend. Her knowledge, firm conviction for justice, and love of the environment were well respected by all. Anne made a difference in this world and she will be missed.

In the nearly 40 years I knew Anne, I was always astounded by the scope, subtlety, depth, and seamlessness with which she managed every project and group she led. Even when the social complexity or intellectual content was mind-boggling, she got people to create beyond their normal reach, while keeping the peace. She was a wonderful personal friend whom I will miss greatly.

Courage, conviction, and burning patience, "whilst she burned she gave a lovely light." I worked with Anne on improving land use in North County at Endangered Habitats League after she retired. Her family will be in my thoughts and prayers. To her granddaughters and grandsons, you live in a better world for the good works she did. Her spark lives on within you.

Back in the mid-70s, I had the extreme good fortune to work with Anne when she was president of the San Diego County National Organization for Women. In those days, I served under her leadership as vice president. From her example I learned many things including how to be an assertive and confident woman. I am only one of the thousands of individuals she personally touch with her intelligence and grace. She will remain forever an important influence in my life and in the lives of all the young girls and women she touched through her political and social activities.

Anne was an inspiration and a great advocate for women. We are all fortunate to have known her. We benefit from the positive changes she helped achieve in San Diego. She was a lovely woman.
