I am really saddened by her death. She was an excellent reviewer and knew her food. I also read her section before anything else in The Reader.

As fearless in person as she was in print, Joan entertained fans all over California. I've never met anyone who knew more about food, and few people who knew more about film. She's irreplacable.

I am the coordinator for Joan's Class of 60 at Hunter College High School in NYC. 200 women will miss her. She was extremely witty and funny with a world view that was constantly optimistic. Whether it was movies or food, Joan could make it come alive with her words.

I too turned to Naomi's reviews in the Reader before I read anything else. In fact, I usually picked up The Reader just to read her reviews. My condolences to her loved ones and the posse and her friends, who must be more shocked than we are. I urge The Reader to post further In Memoriam announcements and full page ones.

Like the previous writer, I relished reading Naomi's restaurant reviews every week, then every other week this past year.
Naomi had a vast, intimate knowledge of foods from Asia, South America, Louisiana and was decidedly not kosher; she reminded me of Barbra Streisand's autobiography, where Barbra recounted a Chinese restaurant and loved "juicy pieces of pork."
Naomi gave us a culinary insider's perspective of what to look for, where to go, and (since I'm too poor to go out) she gave me advice on how to cook like a chef at home via her articles.
I never had the good fortune to meet her in person, we shared one email exchange, regarding rare meat :-) and I'll treasure that.
I'm truly mourning her passing; those who were in her "posse" and the San Diego Reader staff are very much in my thoughts right now, as it must be challenging to press on at this time.
She kept on reviewing and writing to her last day and I'll take that as what she wants us all to do. Like Naomi, impact people in a positive way (at least constructive like Naomi, not merely critical) and your spirit will live on in those who were lucky to be so enriched by you.

Naomi Wise's restaurant reviews were the first thing I turned to when I picked up a Reader every week. She could make or break a restaurant. She was witty, funny and had great style. I was shocked today to see the brief memoriam of her death in today's edition. Hope the food is good up there, Naomi! Rest in peace.

I eagerly awaited each edition of the Reader just so I could read the latest Naomi review. She was a talented writer and will be missed.
