No word can describe the vast emptiness that Hal left at the UCSD Econ department. May he rest in peace.

Hal was one of the unsung greats, at least in the music game. He was always willing to play in my band when another trumpet player couldn't make it, and was always good enough to play in any band. When I taught, he was an inspiration to my students. And he was always a good friend, and to me that counts for more than his playing or his science or his other accomplishments.

I was so sorry to read of my the death of my friend, Dr. Hal White. I played with him in the UCSD Jazz Ensemble when I was an undergraduate in the early '80s, when Hal came to UCSD, Our director, the late Jimmy Cheatham, always got a kick out of announcing, after one of Hal's solos that that was DOCTOR Hal White that was just featured. I just got a kick out of playing with Hal.
I last saw him a couple of years ago, and it was great to reunite with him. He said he was battling cancer, but I figured that, with his great attitude and humor, he'd beat it. But it looks like it was finally time for Hal to join Jimmy and all of the greats having that jam session in the great beyond. Rest, and blow your horn, in Peace, Hal.

I sat next to Hal a couple of years in SW band. He played a great horn then and always had a nice word to say. He will be greatly missed in all his endeavors.

We were sophomores together at Southwest High School. Hal was intelligent, quick-witted, and unfailingly generous in all his encounters. I was not at all surprised to note his extensive accomplishments in later years. Glad to hear he continued to play the trumpet - in so many ways there was no one like him. My condolences to his family.

My deepest sympathies go out to Hal's family and friends. My memories date back to third grade at Border Star when Hal was my best buddy. I can remember spending time in his basement with his ham radio. I couldn't believe that an 8 year old could learn Morse Code. I guess that was a sign of his abilities. And, of course, his trumpet solos at Southwest were unforgettable.
