Jabus Barker, 93, formerly of Utica and recently residing in Kirkland, died June 30, 2014, at the St. Lukes Home. He was born on March 15, 1921, in Fort Worth, Texas, a son of the late Ziska and Elizabeth Melton Barker. He graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in Electrical Engineering. After graduation, he served as an officer in the United States Army Signal Corps, participating in numerous island landings in the Pacific Theater during World War II, and was discharged as a First Lieutenant. Jabus married Betty Elmer on May 2, 1949, in Syracuse, and she died on November 26, 2005. He began working for General Electric in 1946, retiring from General Electric in Utica in 1987 as a senior engineer. He is survived by his sister, Mary New, of Jackson, Tennessee, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Melton Barker, Bruce Barker and Terry Barker. Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home, New Hartford.
