James Davis Obituary

Davis, James Garrett

James Garrett (Garry) Davis, age 74, passed away suddenly December 21, 2015. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eleanora and Charles Davis; and his grandson, Noah Zane Davis. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sally; his sons, Charles B. (Bryse) Davis and Zachary Davis (wife, Trisha); and grandchildren, Reina and Aydin Davis, all of Albuquerque. He is also survived by three brothers-in-law and their families in Ohio and Wisconsin as well as three cousins and their families in Ohio.

Born April 20, 1941, in Canton, OH, Garry received his Bachelor of Science degree in biology in 1963 from Mount Union College, Alliance, OH and his Master of Arts degree in physiological ecology in 1965 from Williams College, Williamstown, MA.

With his love of science, nature and the sharing of knowledge, Garry became a dedicated teacher, teaching at Midland School, Los Olivos, CA; Blake School in Hopkins, MN; and Cincinnati Country Day School in Cincinnati, OH, before coming to Albuquerque Academy in 1984 where he taught until his retirement in 2006.

Outside of the classroom, Garry enjoyed jazz and Big Band era music, especially pieces that featured saxophone solos, nature photography, and was an avid reader. He was a man of integrity, authentic and straightforward, who cared deeply for his family, friends, colleagues and students.

Cremation has taken place and private graveside services are pending. If desired, a donation in Garry's name may be made to any animal/environmental protection group or library of your choice. Please visit our online guestbook for Garry at www.FrenchFunerals.com.

Today we said our goodbyes and lay you to rest in peace. It is clear that your spark will be missed by many that will remember your kindness, witty humor, unconditional generosity, your passion for science and learning as well as the love you gave to your family and friends. You inspired me to embrace education and higher learning. I have no doubt that Noah was right there to greet his grandpa with open arms. You were special and unique Garry, I will miss you!

Gary was a real support for me at Cincinnati Country Day as I tried to upgrade the library to something more than a study hall or recreation center. I valued his friendship and support and am saddened to hear of his death - too soon! My deepest sympathy to his family.

Colleagues at Albuquerque Academy for a number of years, Gary and I shared a love of big band jazz. We played a bit together in the "geezer" band that some of us threw together in the mid-nineties. A man of great integrity. You will be missed, my friend.

Garry was a colleague and my best friend at Albuquerque Academy for 25 years, as well as a good friend outside of school. His joy of teaching was always an inspiration to me, and his dedication to every student, his sense of humor and joy in life, and his absolute honesty kept me on my toes each and every day. Knowing him and working with him made me a better teacher and a better person. He is missed, but he will live on in the memories I have of the laughter, the shared frustrations and joy, the hours we worked and planned together, and the good and bad times we shared and helped each other through during those 25 years.

My most sincere condolences to Sally and his family.

Gary was always great fun to be with, and I especially apprciated his insight into school issues, seeing things clearly and concisely, often from a different perspective from my own. He was one of my favorite colleagues. You were a good man, Gary Davis..
