Madeline Mackey Obituary

Madeline Mae Mackey, 79, passed away at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska, on Oct. 26, 2014. A service will be held at Bible Baptist Church, located at 19535 Old Glenn Hwy in Chugiak, Alaska, on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2014, at 1 p.m. Pastor Dr. Tim Page will be officiating. Additional services will be held at a later date in Dalhart, Texas. Madeline was born in Cornwall on the Hudson, N.Y., to Blanche and Charles Horan on Dec. 19, 1934. Madeline and Harry left Newburg, N.Y., on their wedding day, April 10, 1952. In a 1950 Chevy pickup, they headed toward the Alcan Highway, barely more than a trail at the time, bound for Alaska, where Harry had a job waiting for him working on the Eklutna power tunnel. They eventually made their home in Chugiak, where they raised their two boys, Harry Jr. and Dean. They started Triple M Cabinet and Floorcovering in 1967, which lead to Harry Mackey Quality Homes, when Harry decided houses were built so crooked that he needed to start building them from the ground up. Madeline kept the books and raised the boys, baking cookies with Dean on her hip and chasing Harry Jr. at the same time. Their car broke down in Dalhart, Texas, on a driving trip in 1982. They made their new home there and would farm and feed cattle on the acreage, along what is now Mackey Road, for the next 20 years. Madeline joined the Chamber of Commerce, hospital board and was published regularly in the Dalhart Daily Texan. She sang in the church choir, on the praise team and taught Sunday School at the Dalhart Church of the Nazarene. She loved completing puzzles, playing Scrabble and read a library full of books. Perhaps her greatest ministry was through her cookies. Madeline must have baked a million cookies, delivering them to folks in need of a smile but more often just because. Even when an injured shoulder prevented her from mixing the dough, Harry took up her crooked wooden spoon and her cookie ministry never missed a beat. Madeline loved the Lord and shared His love and grace with everyone she encountered through her twinkling eyes and smile. Madeline is survived by her husband, Harry A. Mackey Sr. of Dalhart, Texas; son, Harry A. Mackey Jr. and wife Beth of Dalhart, Texas; son, Dean A. Mackey and wife Denise S. of Chugiak, Alaska; granddaughters, Meghan Mackey of Eagle River, Alaska, and Bridgett Dyson and husband Jon of Anchorage, Alaska; brother-in-law, Larry Mackey and wife Joy of Anchorage, Alaska; and her extended family Campbell Hodge and family of Big Lake, Alaska; and Chris Mackey and family of Mile City, Mont. Arrangements are with Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel.

Eight years has gone by so quickly and it´s still hard to believe Madeline is gone. We continue to remember her each timewe sing in our praise team at church, songs that she sung as a solo , her name still on the pages of the song book. Her memory will always go with us , and we always remember her sweet , gentle loving spirit. I loved this beautiful lady and I hold her so dear to my heart. May her memory bring her family peace and joy because I know she would want that for them.May the grace of our Lord be with your spirits.

I am so thankful for the time I spent with Madeline and Harry. Although it was short and infrequent, it has made a significant, lasting impact on me. Most precious to me is a memory from my bridal shower. Madeline took my hand in hers and with teary eyes said, "I just hope you can be as happy as Harry and I have been." I was so thankful for the hope and blessing I felt she was giving me in my upcoming wedding. She had such a genuine joy and love in her relationship with the Lord as well as with her husband. What a wonderful treasure to have seen your example. Thank you Madeline and Harry.

Three years ago at my little brother's funeral Madeline saw me and said, "Oh honey, you are taking this hard aren't you?" Then she took my face in her hands in a way that only incredibly loving and wise people can and she said, "No regrets dear. No regrets. You're a beautiful family."

I would like to offer her words back to your family today. I did not know her well, but I don't think I have ever met a couple who so completely embodied graciousness and generosity.

No regrets. You are a beautiful family.

Dearest Harry and family, It has taken me this long to respond because I am so heartbroken by the loss of our sweet Madeline. I know there is much to celebrate; that she is at home in heaven with her Savior. But she brought so much good to this world, it seems much grayer without her. She simply radiated joy. Madeline spread love and kindness everywhere she went. Harry, you and she have been examples of innate goodness. I love you both so much. I mourn with you, deeply. I pray for your comfort, and I am thankful to have had the blessings of you in my life. With much love...

We will miss our best friend, Madeline Mackey. Madeline and Harry were our first friends when we moved to Alaska in1970. We had many wonderful times together from going to movies to picnics at Fish Creek. Thanksgiving was a special time for our families to celebrate. We can still see Madeline's beautiful smile and her happy laugh. She will be sorely missed by all of the Brannons.

Thoughts on Madeline: Loved her boys and their families so much she couldn't help but adopt a bunch more of us.
When I first knew her she taught me so much about how to be a Christian business woman that I've used in every job I've had since. The invaluable things she unknowingly taught me about being a busy working wife, and mother from her stories when she was younger. The last few years, what a fantastic example of aging gracefully with a smile even when she didn't always feel so great anymore. Too much more to list. Love you Big Harry and the rest of your family. Thanks for sharing her!

Our hearts were sorely grieved to hear of Madelines passing. I felt as though I had lost my Mother all over again. Madeline was such a beautiful woman. She loved people and she loved the Lord with such passion. You always saw her welcomed smile and her laughter was contagious. I loved singing with her and we had many tender moments sharing things in our lives. I know that Heaven celebrated wonderfully the day she went to be with the Lord. My prayers go out to the family and to Harry. We love you Harry. May the grace of our Lord be with your spirit.

When Madeline entered a room, joy and kindness followed close behind. Her spirit was so infectious and her cookies not bad either! Godspeed Madeline.

God did such an incredible work in Madeline's spirit and life - she used every natural ability and spiritual gift God gave her to the max! Madeline & Harry were very special to us in so many incredible ways! They ministered to us as well as did their whole family. She took a special interest in our children, Amanda & Adam, at a pivotal time in their lives. We will always be indebted to try to love others as Madeline taught us. What a blessing she has been to so many from the poorest and least of these to the wealthiest and greatest. She showed no favoritism. We will definitely miss her laughter and genuineness. We will pray God will raise up others to assume her Christlike characteristics. Our hearts are sad for you in your loss, but glad to know she is rejoicing with Jesus! She is probably teaching a cookie-making class today in Heaven!
