Courtland Marchant Obituary

Former longtime resident Courtland E. Marchant passed away peacefully at the Portland V.A. Medical Hospital in Portland, Ore., after a short illness. He was surrounded by family and friends at the time of his death.

Court was born July 7, 1924, in Illwaco, Wash., to Emmer and Arlene Marchant, and had three brothers, Bruce, All and Virgil, who all preceded him in death.

He graduated from Illwaco High School in 1942 and joined the Navy in 1942 and received four medals of honor before his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1946.

Court came to Alaska in 1950. He drove his own cab, worked construction and commercial fished. In 1952, Court was hired by Alaska Sales & Service, where he held various positions until 1971 when he became general manager of National Car Rental Licensee until his retirement is 1989.

He was very active in the community. He was Little League coach and soap box derby chairman, 1968-1972. He was a lifetime member with the Mt. McKinley Lions Club for nearly 30 years and was president of the club, 1977-78. He was also a member of the Skal Club, serving as president in 1979.

"Court was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend to all who were lucky enough to know him with his great sense of humor, beautiful smile and loving, generous heart," his family stated.

He enjoyed fishing, traveling and playing poker with his buddies. He especially enjoyed his family, grandchildren and his golden retriever Lucy.

After retirement, Court enjoyed his time at his log home on Brookside Drive in Anchorage with family and friends.

In 2002-2003, Court had the good fortune of reuniting with Jean, a long-lost sweetheart from Oregon, fell in love again and moved to Lake Oswego, Ore. They married July 23, 2003.

Court was preceded in death by his first wife, Lavonne, of 45 years. Court is survived by his son Michael and his wife Kim and daughter Lori of Anchorage; daughter Kim and partner Jenn of California; daughter Kelley Serafine of Vancouver, Wash., son-in-law Bob Serafine; four grandchildren, Andrew Marchant, his wife Ning, Billy Serafine, Matthew Serafine and Kyle Marchant. He is also survived by his second wife, Jean Marchant, her two sons Bob (wife Scarlett), Gary (wife Kathleen) and many grandchildren, all of Oregon.

At Mr. Marchant and family's request there will be no service; interment is in River View Abbey, Portland.

My Darling Court, In. life I loved you dearly, In death I do the same. It broke my heart to lose you, You did not go alone, for part of me went with you that day God called you home. You left peaceful memories, your love is still my guide. And though we cannot see you, you are always at my side. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one by one the chain will link again. From your lady love, Jean

Thinking of you in the loss of your father. He was a wonderful person and always had a kind word. Loved being his neighbor when I was growing up, my parents adored him as did everyone in the good ol' Woodland Park neighborhood. When I got married my husband enjoyed him as much as we did and so did our boys. Such wonderful memories for a wonderful man. He will be missed by many.

I am so sorry for your loss. Your mom and dad were great neighbors on Brookside. They are a big part of our fond memories of living in Anchorage and truly defined what a "good neighbor" is and should be. You have my most sincere sympathies.

To my cousins, Mike, Lori, Kim, Kelley and your families and Aunt Jean, I offer my deep sympathy in your loss of a great father, father in law, grandpa and husband. We all loved your dad and Jean, your husband. You all made up a wonderful family who Uncle Court was so proud of. He loved keeping in touch with family, even we nieces and nephews. We loved to get together with he and Jean because he held the Marchant's together, which was nice for those of us whose parents have passed. He was always my favorite Uncle. No matter how much he suffered with ailments he always burst out laughing as he told you his symptoms as if he were telling a funny story about someone else! He always made everyone around him smile and laugh and appreciate how fortunate they were. I was fortunate to have him for my Uncle for many years and I will always be grateful and remember him with a smile and a tear. Love you all......Cousin/Niece, Trudy

I am so sorry for the loss of your dad. I remember well playing at the pond behind your house, the ducks and horse you once had and always being welcomed by your parents. They were always very kind and I know your dad will be missed. May the memories you have of him keep him alive in your hearts forever.

Having worked at Alaska Sales and Service with Court and also with his son Mike. I have many great memories of Court while we were out fishing during Ak Sales trips. He was always the camp cook with always lots of great humor coming from the kitchen. They was never a dull moment with Court around with his great personality and that great big smiles of his. May you rest in peace and my deepest sympathy to all of the family in Alaska and Oregon.
