Melvin Cheek Obituary

Melvin Eugene Cheek, 62, died suddenly April 19, 2011, while at home enjoying a beautiful spring evening outside on the deck.

A private viewing will be held for the family. A celebration of life and casual potluck will be held at the Best Western Golden Lion on 36th Avenue and Seward Highway at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 30th.

Mel was born in California on March 11, 1949. His family moved to Oklahoma City, Okla., where he spent his youth, attended college and began his career. After graduating in 1973 from the University of Southwestern College in Oklahoma, Mel pursued a rewarding, successful career in accounting and finance. At the time of Mel's death he was the corporate controller for Chenega Corporation. Upon moving to Alaska, Mel worked for the Juneau Empire and the Tyonek Corp. before his employment with Chenega.

Mel lived a life full of interesting hobbies, well-defined talents and enjoyable activities. He had an intense appreciation for the woods and was an avid outdoorsman. Whether enjoying the peace and quiet of his cabin at Caswell Lakes, the flexibility of camping trips in the trailer or gathering friends and taking the quads out in the woods and on trails -- Mel was at home and happy in the woods. He looked forward to hunting season and was known to be as meticulous and strategic at hunting as he was at accounting.

Mel's other talents included photography, music, collecting and traveling. His early photography focused on capturing live rodeo on film; over time Mel added a host of professional quality landscape and outdoor Alaska shots to his portfolio. Those who were fortunate enough to spend time with Mel learned firsthand of his love for music and were privileged to hear him strum his guitar, play fiddle and break out the banjo.

In more quiet times, Mel would share his intrigue of the Civil War by showcasing his artifacts or by showing friends his valuable gun collection. Mel's intensity for life was witnessed in his extensive travels -- he was happiest viewing historic landmarks and places, visiting family and meeting new friends.

Mel is survived by his best friend, Greg Ingersoll. Surviving family includes his mother, Myrtle Cheek, sons Jeffrey and Michael; daughter-in-law Jamie; sister Paulette; granddaughters Morgan and Leslie; two nephews and Greg's two children. Mel will be missed by his immediate family and closest friends, his work family and extended family and friends in Anchorage, Juneau and Oklahoma. Mel was preceded in death by his father, Paul Cheek.

Mel, It was my pleasure to work with and for you for almost 26 years, until you decided to move to Alaska, your dream home. You had a big role and positive influence on my career with Dolese and I owe many of my achievements with Dolese, to you. You were always generous with your time and your knowledge.

The world has lost a one of a kind guy, with many interests and talents, from playing pool, antique collecting, photography, racketball, music and hunting, just to hame a few.

You will be greatly missed by all and I will never forget you. Walk with the angels as boldly as you did on earth.

What a tragic and untimely loss. I did not know Melvin personally, but through Greg I knew he was an extraordinary individual. He had an amazing family and I can't imagine the emptiness you all must feel. May Melvin rest in peace.

"Shaking the tree boss, shaking the tree" one of Mel's favorite movies was Cool Hand Luke. Mel was one of the best mentors I will ever have and I will never forget him.

Mel and I didn't know eachother well. But most mornings we'd be pulling out onto our street at the same time... ever the gentleman, he'd wave me out with a big grin and a tip of his hat. A seemingly small ritual, but one that always made my day a bit brighter. Greg, I am so sorry for your loss and pray that time and happy memories soon ease your pain.

Mel, It was always such a pleasure to be around you and work for you.
With a quick sense of humor and a calm demeanor, I always knew that there wasn't anything that you wouldn't be able to solve. You made our office a brighter place. I will never forget you.

Mel, you brought a wonderful spark of life to all that knew and loved you. You shared yourself unselfishly with those around you and brought much love and joy to others. That spark will live on through your friends and family and especially your soul mate, Greg. What a blessing you both have been to each other. This is a rare and precious thing in this crazy wonderful world. Now you are dancing with the Angels.

Always,
Karen

When I first met Mel, with no fault of his own, it was under stressful circumstances. I wanted very much not to like him. I tried not to like him. I failed. Mel had an undemanding and welcoming personality. He made a room feel just a little bit warmer, he made a smile come quite a bit faster and he made the work load a whole lot easier to bear. It was my great fortune to have known and worked for such a kind man. Mel will never be forgotten.

Mel, I will miss you so much! No words can express the tortured grief I suffer at the loss of one of my closest friends and mentor. You taught me how not to be afraid of life and all the good and wonderful things life gives us, to include you!
Greg, if you need anything at all, please feel free to get in touch, and thank you Greg for being the person that you are.

To my little brother. You were always a lot of fun when you were young, and as an adult. We looked forward to and enjoyed your visits so much, because we knew we would hear about another harrowing yet exciting adventure. Just talked with you a week ago, so can't believe I can't pick up the phone and give you a call. We loved you and will continue to miss you very much.
Your loving sister,
