Peter Zamarello Obituary

Peter G. Zamarello, 86, passed away at Mat-Su Regional Hospital in Wasilla, Alaska, on Oct. 25, 2014. A visitation will be held at Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel, located at 737 E Street on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014, from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. A second visitation will be held at St. Innocent Cathedral, located at 401 Turpin St. in Anchorage, Alaska, on Thursday, Oct. 30 at 2 p.m., with a service to follow at 3 p.m., with Father Nicholas Harris officiating. Burial will be held privately. Peter was born in Kefalonia, Greece, to Aphrodite and Gerasimu Zamarello on Aug. 25, 1928. He became a resident of Anchorage, Alaska, in January of 1958, before moving to Wasilla in 2003. When Peter first came to Alaska he was a carpenter and eventually became the largest commercial developer in the state. Before moving to the United States, Peter was in the Greek Merchant Marine. He jumped ship in Albany, N.Y., and three weeks later met the love of his life, Patricia. Peter was instantly smitten and they married two weeks later. Peter was a lifetime member of the NAACP, and he enjoyed fishing, boating, collecting stamps, gardening, cooking for friends and family, studying history and loved St. Innocent's Cathedral. Peter was fluent in four languages. He had a special affection for what he called "little duckies." Peter is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Patricia; daughter, Carol Z. Johnson and husband, Curtis of Hailey, Idaho; granddaughter, Carolyn Johnson of Vancouver, Wash.; grandson, Collin Johnson of Hailey, Idaho; sister, Angela of Kefalonia, Greece; as well as many nieces and nephews. The family would like to say that he "loved Alaska and America. He was the most optimistic person in the world, had a brilliant mind, was generous to all who knew him and could tell a joke better than anyone. He was a much loved husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed." He is preceded in death by his parents, Aphrodite and Gerasimu Zamarello; sister, Anna; and brother, Anastasios. Arrangements are with Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel.

I only met Pete once but I always admired him as a person that had drive and determination to accomplish what he did. His life was a true Alaskan rags to riches story.

I research Kefalonian families, and started to work on Peter's ancestry past couple of weeks. On his mother's side he is part of the Vasilatos-Mitarozos clan. Peter (Panagis) I wish you safe journey. To Peter's loved ones, my condolences. Lets remember Peter's many contributions.

I sat next to Pete Zamarello on a flight from Anchorage to Seattle in 1977. He gave me some advice about life that I took to heart (I was 21). Our paths never crossed again, but he made such an impression on me that I remembered him all these years. My condolences to the family. The guy knew how to live.

Our condolences to Pat, Carol, and family. Pete was one of the most complicated individuals I have ever met. I met him over 40 years ago and he had a personality that was bigger than life. He loved to tell a good joke in one breath and close a multimillion dollar deal in the next breath. He was my boss, best man at our wedding, and a friend. Rest in Peace.

I only knew Mr. Zamarello through others but learned to admire him greatly. I believed that in Alaska glaciers were all blue because they were built by Pete Zamarello!

My condolences to the Zamarello family. I met Pete in 1963shortly after I arrived in Alaska. Pete was one of the most brilliant and positive people I have ever known. We had shared many luncheons and his many stories were extremely interesting as well as many very humorous. Pete is the end of an era. He could build more efficiently than any contractor on the block. He stood up for what he believed. I truly enjoyed all my association with him. His home was a landmark. Certainly one of a kind. We will all miss you, Pete. Have a grand trip. Chuck & Terry Homan

Pete will be missed. I went to work for him in 1972 when he opened the IGA store in Sand Lake. He was not only my boss, but a friend and a kind man to those who worked fairly for him. All he ever required was to be honest with him.
He treated my family like we were his family. I loved the smile he would get every time he picked up my then 3 year old son and carry him around the store.
My heart goes out to Pat and Carol in their loss. God bless you both.
