Stephen Guiel Obituary

Anchorage resident Stephen Torsten Guiel, 55, died Sunday, April 17, 2011 at Alaska Regional Hospital.

Graveside services will be held noon today (Friday, April 22) at Fort Richardson National Cemetery with military honors. Please meet at the Fort Richardson gate (off the Glenn Highway) at 11:30 a.m.

Stephen was born Aug. 1, 1955, at Burtonwood AFB, Warrington, Lancashire, England. He graduated from Cabrillo Senior High School at Vandenberg Village, Calif. He attended Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, Calif., and the University of Maryland. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on Oct. 21, 1975, and retired August, 1995. He moved to Alaska in May, 1986. He married Ofelia Insenia Urias on Feb. 22, 1990 in Anchorage.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and guns.

His family wrote: "He had a lifelong love for the outdoors, which was instilled in him by his father. Hunting was his first love, but in later years, he enjoyed fly-fishing for trout and salmon. He loved to cook for family and friends. Stephen was well known on the Guns & Game forum as SwedeSteve and was well known at The New Gun Trader. He was one of those rare individuals who could make an instant connection with anybody. Stephen was very proud of his Swedish heritage on his mother's side. His ancestry included soldiers who fought in the American Revolution and one ancestor who arrived on the Mayflower to settle the New World."

Stephen is survived by his wife, Ofelia; son, Jesse; daughter, Susan; son, Buddy; daughter, Lisa; and grandchildren, Devin, Cody, Marissa, Christian, and Shaniah, all of Alaska; father, William H. Guiel, Wash.; mother, Carol Natalie Lund, Calif.; two brothers, William D. Guiel and Paul A. Guiel, Wash.; and one sister, Eleanor I. DeWitt, Hawaii; and many nieces and nephews.

Steve was my platoon sergeant when I was with 1st Platoon Bravo Company 6th ID. He was a good leader and a good man. He taught me a lot about life and being a good soldier. He really looked out for me and the rest of 1st platoon. I thought of him often through out the years. I will miss you.

Goodbye friend

April 24, 2011

To my Cousin Natalie and her entire family I want to give my sympathy on the loss of son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Although I have only met Stephen a few times in his lifetime, he was a part of that Swedish Family that we cherish and will certainly be missed on our Family Tree. I know he loved his children and grand and greatgrandchildren, and will be missed dearly by all of his family.

God bless you all as you review the good memories of your years together.

Sincerely, Cousin Charlotte and husband Earl Chapin.

Many of us on the G&G forum always appreciated Steves intellect, his sense of brotherhood and family, and his interest in a wide range of activities including recipes and cooking. As with his family and friends we too will miss him on this forum.

My family and I would like to express our deepest condolences to Mama Natalie, Dave, Paul, and Elly. Even though Steven was my friend, I considered him family. We grew up together from going thru high school to both of us joining the military and he has always been someone I would call a friend. Everyone who has known Steven has been touch by his heart and soul. May we meet again my brother.
