Michael Petrov Obituary

Michael Chris Petrov died February 17, 2014 of complications due to cancer. He was born August 22, 1946 to Anthony and Martha Petrov in McMinnville, OR. He was introduced to firearms early, learning to shoot, to love guns, and to revere fine craftsmanship.

Mike attended high school in Broomfield, CO. At 17 he joined the Army. Stationed in Germany; he got his GED because someone told him he couldn't. After discharge, Mike flipped a coin. Alaska won, and he drove the Alcan in February '67. He may have met good friend gunsmith and shooter Bill Fuller and Betty in Cooper Landing on his way to the Kenai Peninsula. At The Fort he met many gun friends, friendships he kept all his life.

Mike settled in Sterling, and worked for Luke's Welding. In 1967 he met Janet, his future copy editor, and married her in 69. They welcomed daughter Charity in 1970. That summer he commercial-fished out of Ninilchik.

Mike's gun collecting suffered from a trailer fire late in 69. He switched from collecting guns to cartridges, just until he could rebuild his War Chest. Wherever he lived he made space for gun stuff, even just a corner or a tiny closet.

In 1974, he bought a home in Kasilof with his own shooting range. Working as an oil platform operator with a 7 on/7 off schedule, he had time to devote to research. By 1980, he was preparing his first article for Precision Shooting. In 1990 Mike became computer-savvy and his snail mail and e-mail ranged all over the world By 1995 his daughter convinced him to collect his articles into book form, Custom Gunmakers of the 20th Century, Volumes I (2005) and II (2013).

Michael is survived by wife, Janet; daughter, Charity, stepchildren, Diana Green, Darcy Youngberg, Ken Green and Lisa Green; sister, Maria Van Kempen (Eugene); brothers, Tony and John Petrov, Joe (and Ann) Petrov.

A celebration of his life will be held at Alaska Aviation Museum Monday, March 10, 1-3 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to BIG BROTHERS and BIG SISTERS.

Michael was a very good friend for several decades although we only met twice. We shared a lot of interests and enjoyed helping each other with projects. Michael was one of the most generous men I've known and I will try to be more like him in my own life.
My condolences to Janet and Charity for the enormity of your loss.

Mike will greatly missed, I knew him for years through the gun culture. We met in person only a few times, with lots of e-mails, and phone calls in between.

A great big bear of a man who was always pleasant, and, always had time to talk about a great rifle. We have lost a great friend.

My sincere condolences to Petrov family. Michael and I never met in person but spoke many times on the phone and exchanged many, many emails over the year. His depth and breadth of knowledge was tremendous and his enthusiasm for the subject was infectious. He taught me a lot about firearms, but also taught me a lot more. I will really miss being able to talk to him. Rest in peace Michael.

Very sorry to hear about his passing. I enjoyed his writings in PS magazine very much. I ironically just sent him some 1940s ivory from my grandpa's piano store, with a note saying I won't live long enough to use them up. Never knew he was in poor health. God bless and keep you all.

It's hard in just a few words to say just how much Michael was appreciated around the world, his knowledge was phenomenal. He helped me out on many occasions, and offered consolation and advice when I started Chemotherapy. You left us all far to young. Farewell Michael and thanks for letting us get to know you, even if it was just in a small way.

So sorry for your loss. Please know that God is your comfort and support during this difficult time. My deepest sympathy.

Michael was one of th worlds real gentlemen, he shared his knowledge with everyone and went out of his way to help other shooting brethren whenever he could. He was of great assistance when I started my Chemo' being very supportive. Farewell Michael my friend, you left all of us far too soon.

Michael always took time to patiently answer my trivial little gun questions in a very congenial way. I still find myself thinking "Gee, I should ask Michael about that..." Wish I could have met him in person. Hope he is with all the famous gunsmiths he researched.

Michael was a Fred Adolph Springfield of a man-he was top shelf goods. Godspeed, Michael and save we fellow gun nuts a good seat; we'll continue the Grand Discussion on a different plane.

What a great author, gun nut, historian, researcher, and all around good person. Michael will be missed by his family and relatives but also by those of us who read his articles and books and appreciated his depth of knowledge and insight. Though I only met him in person once, I, and others, will cherish and refer back to letters, emails, and online postings of his for years to come. Great loss for us all. God bless and thank you once again, Michael, for your great and lasting contributions.

I live in New Zealand and never met Michael in person, only online and what a gentleman he was.

My sincere condolences to Michael's family.

Words cannot express the impact he has made on the collecting community and his legacy will forever live on in his books and articles. A rare individual who would always welcome a phone call at any time of day and freely share his research and knowledge. In this internet age his influence has spanned the globe.
The loss to everyone is immeasurable.

All my best, Stan
