I still remember the first day (although I don't remember the year... around 1998) I met Carol. She was a passenger on the bus from Anchorage to Fairbanks. From that day on, she became a close friend of our family. She would always invite me over for a homemade dinner - (one time, she made me fiddlehead ferns harvested from near Talkeetna because I had never tried them) or taking me out to dinner countless times - when I was overnighting in Anchorage.
Over the years she gifted to me memories and objects that held special meanings for her, and now for me. Objects that had a story behind them, such as the potlatch utensil carved out of a piece of birch and given to her by a native elder during her days living in Nenana. Or, knowing I was an avid reader, like herself, she'd give me books (one she had kept since the 50's) that she thought I would enjoy (I did). Every time I see these, I think of Carol. In a loving show of support, she wrote articles on the bus service and hostel we owned in Alaska Magazine. Most of all she was a friend who with every interaction, showed she cared and loved. We miss you Carol.

We will always remember Carol for her dignity, honesty, and sense of humor and hold her as a model of kindness and generosity. Her stories will live on with us as will her shining spirit. We are grateful we were friends and will always honor her memory.

I was so sorry to read of Carol's death. She was a dear friend to Norman and to me. My love goes out to her family. She will be missed. She was a great Alaskan.

Grandma was such an amazing woman. She took me and Jacob true in when we had no one. I love that woman. She taught me a lot. And I was very blessed to have her 1st great great grandson. Khyler lane true. You will be greatly misse . I wish I could have had a chance to come up so you could meet Khyler. I sure miss you. You were an angel to me then and you are now. Your in gods hand . I love you grandma carol!!!!

I met Carol when I worked for Denali N.P.& P. ages ago. Over the years, we would meet for coffee or lunch in Anchorage. Carol was so interesting to listen to. Her life story would have made a fascinating book. One thing, in spite of the hardships that sometimes interrupted, she was always positive. She had this way about her. You knew that if you were her friend, you were important. You sensed that there was something within you that made you a worthy individual. She made you feel that way. I would remember some of her favorite lines," Would you like to join me in a cup of tea? Do you think we'd both fit?" "I'm still coping on Cope Street."
I remember going back to NHS after graduation. She was still the school secretary. She pulled out my student file. There was only one negative statment in that record. I had reported late to a study hall. She opened the file over the trash can and that statement fell into the trash can.
I remember going over to her place and Ann's place, next door, after classes at UAA. It was like a home away from home. Catch you later...

Carol was such a blessing to me during my tenure as administrator of Nenana Schools. She was a secretary's secretary.....always there to add the proper perspective to each and every situation that needed to be addressed. I send a prayer out to her family with my deepest sympathy. I remember Carol as a very gracious hostess, even to me as a teenager in her house or on the street. She always asked with genuine concern as to how I was. She always made me feel respected, therefore, I held her in high esteem also. RIP Mrs Phillips...I will always remember your kindness that you spread around so selflessly and honestly...Love you ...

Dearest Carol,
You were the light and the rock of strength for so many. I will miss you every day. Without your help the Dr. Schultz record album may never have happened. Thank you for all your kind words of support and advise. I will remember all the wonderful dinners we shared. Your introducing Norman Vaughn to me and the band was a life changing experience for us all.
My deepest condolences to all of Carols large family and her numerous friends. We will never forget you.

My grandmother Carol was the light that helped me find my way. I will always love and cherish the memories of her, and share stories of her with my daughter Mykayla. You will live on through us in memory, spirit, and in our hearts forever.

I first met Carol Phillips when I was working with Doc "Don" Schultz. Doc loved and respected Carol. and appreciated all of her help in promoting the "Dr. Schultz" Band in the late 1970's. I am proud to have called her a close friend since then.
Col. Norman Vaughan once told me that she had a special soul. He considered her a dear friend.

We fondly remember Carol from our days in Nenana. She was the school secretary and we appreciated her so very much. She always had a smile, a good word and advise for young teachers. She will always be in our memories.

Carol Phillips is the embodiment of style of Americana dignity that may be lost to coming generations: personally, she was gracious and attentive to every person she met; professionally, her editorial guidance was both direct and warming. I first met Carol while studying journalism at UAF. And, I recall fondly how friends and I ventured the arduous Park's Highway (day and a half trip given the condition of the highway and our little pickups in the early 80s) to submit our typed up stories in hopes that Alaska Magazine might print them, thus furthering our fledgling careers. How warmly Carol welcomed us and how respectfully she considered our work, no matter what dribble we laid on her desk. I'm now an editor for an international project, and Carol still holds the standard for me to obtain - and no doubt for others whose lives she has touched. I am so profoundly grateful to have known her.

Some of my happiest childhood memories are of spending time at my Aunt Caroline's homes in Marlboro, NY and Hulls Cove, Maine. I still have vague memories of her graduation from Bard College and her wedding to my Uncle John and her visits with my mother who was her best friend. Caroline was the adventurous member of our family, kind, sympathetic and understanding. I didn't get to see her often since her family's move to Alaska but her rare visits were great treats for my family.
I will miss her calls and notes and wonderful sense of humor. With love to all her family.

Amazing woman. Always made time for a visit when either of us were in Anchorage or Fairbanks. Many wonderful stories of her life in Alaska that she would share, especially the early days and the people she had met. Amazing how active Carol was. An inspiration. Thank you for everything Carol.

Carol was a wonderful person to know and to have worked with since the late 70's. We worked together while helping found the Alaska SIDS chapter and remained friends. Though we only ran into each other on occasion the last few years. It was always like we has just picked up the conversation that we had left off. She was a beautiful person and my deepest sympathies to her entire family and to Cate that I also knew. Know you are in my thoughts and prayers.
