Joshua Wright Obituary

Dr. Joshua Wright, 88, passed away on Nov. 2, 2017, after a brief illness. Dr. Wright was born on Aug. 6, 1929, in Georgetown, S.C., to Joshua and Louise Wright. Dr. Wright received a Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in Zoology and a minor in Chemistry from Howard University, Washington D.C. He then received a Doctor of Dental Surgery from Howard University, College of Dentistry. He was employed as a staff dentist at the Public Health Service Hospital in Mt. Edgecombe, Alaska, from 1956 to January 1958. In 1957, he married his beautiful wife, Lillie (Mitch) Wright. In February 1958, he and his wife relocated to Anchorage, Alaska, where Dr. Wright started a private practice of General Dentistry. After practicing dentistry for 55 years, he retired in 2013.
In addition to practicing dentistry, Dr. Wright was a member of the Anchorage School Board from 1969 to 1972, where he gained his budgetary experience. His budget expertise was later relied upon while serving on the House Finance Committee in the Alaska State Legislature from 1970 to 1972.
Dr. Wright served as the president of the Alaska Dental Society from 1967-1968; Chairman of the Dental Board of Examiners from 1967 to 1968; and President of Brotherhood Inc. from 2006 to the present. He was also an active member of the First Presbyterian Church for over 50 years.
At nearly 60 years of age, Dr. Wright and his wife, Lillie, made the selfless decision to adopt and raise their three infant grandchildren. That act was only one of the many examples of his character and the love he had for his family.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joshua Wright I; his mother, Louise Wright; his sisters, Vera Memminger and Mary Ella Greene; and his brother, Nathaniel Wright. Dr. Wright is survived by his wife, Lillie; his sons, Joshua J. Wright III and Roderick M. Wright; daughter, Jaqueline Y. Wright; his three grandchildren, Brittini J. Wright, Joshua J. Wright IIII and Jamarah D. Wright; and five great-grandchildren.
There will be no service held.

To Mrs. Wright and family, Dr WRIGHT was much more than our family dentist for over 20 years, he was my personal mentor in life, business and political interactions. Doc always had time to share his special wisdom and advice as I faced the many challenges while serving on the Anchorage School Board and in the Alaska Legislature.

I think you Sis. WRIGHT for your love and friendship starting from my brief employment with the U S Post Office where I had the pleasure of being your mail carrier.

I pray that God will continue to spread his blessings upon your family during this time of your grief.

To the Wright family! Doc's contribution to our community will be sorely missed. He contributed so much to young people. The MLK Career Center for students wanting a vocational education and scholarships for those desiring a college degree. His legacy will live in the life of those he helped.

Mitch, Jackie, Jay, Rodney, Brittinni, Josh, Jamarah and families,

I'm so sorry for your loss! I always enjoyed the times I got to spend with Josh. Especially, the Daughter dinners that we were able to have with all the parents. Dad and Josh would talk for hours, enjoying the fact that their daughters were taking care of the meal.

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of your loss!

Dr. Wright was my favorite Dentist. He was gentle and kind and because of him I've never had a fear of dentists. He was my dentist from 1958 until I left Alaska in 1982. I am so sorry for your family's loss and may his incredible life be a reminder that one life can make a difference.
