Margaret Snell Obituary

Margaret Fulmer Snell September 12 AD 1920
December 26 AD 2014
"Strength and dignity are her clothing,
And she smiles at the future."
Proverbs 31:25
COLUMBIA, SC - Margaret LaRue Fulmer Snell was a Proverbs 31 wife, mother and grandmother of noble character. She was welcomed into eternal glory on December 26, 2014 at the age of 94.
She was a trendsetter, a diva, a lady others were drawn toward in life and even her last days toward death.
Exuding joy from her core, she lit up a room with her laughter and loved unconditionally. She was seldom without lipstick, coiffed hair and beautifully painted nails.
Margaret was the youngest of seven children born September 12, 1920 in Columbia to the late Arthur Zebedee and Lula Eve Haltiwanger Fulmer.
She married the love of her life at age 19, the late Allen Samuel Snell, Sr.
Through a 65 year covenant marriage; they raised four beautiful children and became "Granny" to eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Known to be outgoing, Margaret never met a stranger. She enjoyed working both inside the home as a steadfast wife and mother and eventually outside the home at Hostess Gift Shop and Lourie's.
She loved the LORD Jesus, her family and friends and was a longstanding member of Shandon, Johnston, Littleton Street and (later) Trenholm Road United Methodist Churches.
Mrs. Snell battled dementia with unprecedented vigor and charm, ready with a contagious smile and a warm "I love you." A special thank you to the National Health Care Parklane staff for their compassionate care.
She is predeceased by her six siblings, her husband, and two sons, Charles Zebedee and Bruce Karl.
Margaret is survived by her son, retired Lt Col Allen Snell, Jr. (Cindy) and their daughters, Molly Jones (Dewayne) and Sara Johnson (Tripp); her daughter, Gayle Potter (David) of Old Lyme, CT and her children, Matt Mims (Denise) and Susannah Smith; and daughter-in-law, Dr. Cindy Snell of Columbia and her children, Mills (Stephanie), Parker, Margarette Ruth and Josiah Snell.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association (act.alz.org) or to a charity of one's choice.
Visitation will be at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, Monday, December 29, 2014 from 5 until 7:00 p.m. and a graveside service will be in Mount of Olives Cemetery, Johnston, SC, Tuesday, December 30th at 2:00 p.m., conducted by Rev. Dr. Tim McClendon.

Mrs. Snell was a true Southern Woman! I worked with her at Lourie's in Columbia Mall and truly enjoyed every moment in her presence. Always dressed, coifed and outgoing! She will be missed by many I'm sure! May her memory be eternal!

I am sorry to hear of Margaret's passing. She was indeed always entertaining and positive and she loved her family dearly. Her grandchildren are a reflection of her and her goodness. It brings me joy thinking of her reuniting with Bruce in Heaven.

I had the privilege of meeting Mrs. Margaret at National Health Care when my mother was on Floor #2 with her. Mrs. Margaret always had a big smile on her face and asked anyone passing by to stop by to see her. She would tell us that she loved us which made us love her. She will be greatly missed by those of us who visit NHC Pam Faile, Winnsboro, SC

I had the honor of knowing Mrs. Snell when I worked at NHC she was a very loving and caring lady. Never seen her without makeup or lipstick her hair fixed always dressed nice and most of all she loved her jewelry. I remember she always matched everything to a tee. I'm so sorry to hear od her passing she will truly by missed. Knowing her like I did I bet she's up in heaven dancing and laughing. I know she suffers now more. I loved her very much and will miss her, May God be with her family & friends at this time and help them to et through this time. God Bless and Love Tina

“I love you every day. And now I will miss you every day.” Granny you gave me so much inspiration and love! Some of my favorite childhood memories are with you! I know that you will be the angel in my life always looking down and smiling.

A true patriarch of the Snell family. Her personality was her biggest contribution. As her oldest grandchild I can attest that she never uttered a negative comment about anyone and emphasized the positive in everything. From the sales floor at Lourie's I observed her ability to cross lines of race, gender and economic status and meet anyone at their level. "Go big or go home" was exemplified during every interaction. I was too small at the time to appreciate this but learned by example. I was taught diversity at a very young age, Granny's friendship and mutually earned respect still amazes me. I cannot recall anyone other than family who addressed Granny with anything other than Mrs. Snell.
To my Mom Gayle and my uncle Al. Reflect in the days to come in celebration not mourning. Celebrate the legacy of your mom and take comfort in the fact that she moves on without suffering.
