William Edward Guthier
VERO BEACH, FL - William Edward Guthier was born on November 13, 1923 in Huntington, Indiana. He was the son of Henry Sylvestor Guthier and Helen Frances Parker. He had one brother, Jack Norman Guthier. While growing up in Huntington, he attended St. Peter and Paul Catholic School, and Huntington High School, from which he graduated in 1941. He attended Purdue University and Indiana University prior to enrolling at DePauw University as part of the U.S. Navy V-12 officer candidate program. While at DePauw, he met his future wife, Monica Margaret Kelly. Bill and Monica were married on July 29, 1945 while Bill was undergoing Scouts and Raiders training for the U.S. Navy. After completing his Naval service, he completed his college education at Kalamazoo College in Michigan. In 1952, after a brief career as a high school athletic coach, he moved his family to Houston, TX and began a career as an occupational safety engineer. He continued this profession for the rest of his working life finishing as a senior executive for the loss prevention insurance industry in Chicago, IL. In 1989, he and Monica retired in Sarasota, FL.
Along the way, he and Monica had seven children- Steve, Anne, Billie, Kathy, Mimi, Joyce, and Matt. They were blessed with 16 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren. William is predeceased by his wife, Monica; his brother, Jack; his daughter Anne; and his grandson, Steve.
Bill spent his last years with his high school sweetheart, Susanna Bayman Schreiber. They were married on May 13, 2005. They moved to Aiken, SC, where they resided until July of 2015. He then moved to Vero Beach, FL to be near his family.
Bill was blessed with many talents and passions. He led a full life engaged in travel, sports, and painting well into his early nineties. He passed away in Vero Beach on June 13, 2017. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
