Dr. Israel Saginaw DDS

Saginaw, Dr. Israel, DDS 5/24/2015 Ann Arbor Dr. Israel "Sol" Saginaw, 96, passed away at his Ann Arbor home on Sunday, May 24, 2015. Sol was born in Detroit, Michigan, on November 16, 1918, the first child of Abraham and Pearl Saginaw and the first of his family to be born in the United States. After graduating from Central High School, Sol attended Wayne State University. He received a low draft number, but was deferred to allow him to finish his degree. From 1941-1945, he served his country in the army. After attending Officer Candidate School, Sol was in the Coast Artillery Corp stateside and then in Hawaii, Okinawa and Korea. He achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant. In 1943, on leave at home, he married the love of his life, Helen Sherman, "the girl who lived downstairs." Their first child was born while Sol was on his way to Okinawa. After the war, Sol attended the University of Detroit School of Dentistry, graduating in 1950. He practiced dentistry in Detroit for 41 years and was an active member of the Alpha Omega Fraternity. After retiring, Sol and Helen enjoyed traveling and visiting their children and grandchildren. Two years after the death of his beloved Helen, Sol sold his home in Southfield and moved to Ann Arbor, where he could be closer to some of his children and grandchildren. He became active in the Ann Arbor JCC where he was a loyal member of the choir, the senior program and Yiddish Club. Sol was always happiest when his family was present - at Passover in Rochester, at celebrations for birthdays, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, etc. To celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, Sol and Helen took their entire family to Disney World. To celebrate his 90th birthday, Sol chose to take his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren on a cruise to Alaska. Survivors include children Lorraine (Stephen) Dvorin, Carol Saginaw (Joachim Frank), Paul (Lori) Saginaw; grandchildren Michael Dvorin, David (Lisa) Dvorin, Hosea Frank (Jody Brandt), Jeffrey Dvorin (Seeta Badrinath), Zachary Saginaw, Mariel Frank, and Benjamin Saginaw; great-grandchildren, Gina Dvorin, Lindsey Dvorin, Samuel Dvorin, Zoe Dvorin, Ian Dvorin, Lyra Dvorin and Jonah Frank; nephew, Jeffrey (Dana) Nusbaum, grandnephew, Joshua Nusbaum and grandniece, Adrienne Nusbaum. Sol is predeceased by his parents Abraham and Pearl Saginaw, his sister, Grace Nusbaum, and his wife, Helen Sherman Saginaw. Burial at Machpelah Cemetery, 21701 Woodward Ave, Ferndale MI on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at 10:00am. Celebration of Sol's Life at Temple Beth Emeth, on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, 2:00pm.
