Dorothy Barrow Obituary

Barrow, Dorothy Jean Vogel 3/10/1917 - 9/27/2014 McKinleyville, CA Dorothy Jean Vogel Barrow 97, passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 27, 2014 in McKinleyville, CA. Dorothy was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the second child of Raymond W. and Edna C. Vogel. Ann Arbor was her home until 2009 when she moved to McKinleyville to be near family. Dorothy married the love of her life, Gerald "Jerry" Vincent Barrow, in 1940. They met while he was a student at the University Of Michigan School Of Dentistry and she was working as a dental assistant. After their marriage she assisted in his orthodontic practice while raising their two daughters, Jill and Lynn. She was active in the Dental Auxiliary for many years, as well as many other local organizations, such as the Women's City Club and Meals on Wheels. Dorothy loved gardening and spent many hours tending her flowers. She especially loved her roses. Her hobby was pressing flowers and using them to make beautiful greeting cards. She was actively enjoying this hobby even during the final years of her life. Her family will always cherish these greeting cards. Dorothy was a blessing to all of her family and friends. She was always there to lend a helping hand during the hard times and to celebrate the good times. She was always loving, always loved, and will be forever in our hearts. She was our rock. Dorothy is survived by her daughters Lynn Kitchen (David) of McKinleyville, CA and Jill Wilkins of Jackson, MI; her sisters Suzanne Schneider, Janice McCloskey (Jack), and Patra Kobeck; five grandchildren: Wendy Rasmussen (Tom), Megan Kulick (Mitch), Erin Tinnermon (Brad), Elizabeth Poston (Matthew), and Kathryn Kitchen (Collin); eight great- grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry, who passed away in l976. Though she was a widow for 38 years and had several suitors, she always turned them down saying "When you've had the best, why settle for less." She was also preceded in death by her beloved brother, "Pat" (Raymond W. Vogel, Jr), who at age 16 was the youngest cadet to ever enter The U.S. Naval Academy. He was a Navy Ace in WWII and was the first Navy Ace to lose his life in the Korean War. Special thanks to all the caregivers and staff at Timber Ridge in McKinleyville. You were wonderful to Mom. A celebration of Dorothy's life will be held next summer at the First Presbyterian Church in Ann Arbor at a time to be announced. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to your favorite charity, or plant a rose in her honor.

Jill and Lynn: Your mom was one of a very few people that I have known my entire life, and would have remembered the day I was born. She was always so gracious and had a good sense of humor at all those pinochle parties. My sympathy goes out to you all.
