Bernard Agaman Obituary
AGE: 71 • Eatontown
Bernard G. Agaman, 71, of Eatontown died peacefully at home surrounded by the love of his family on Tuesday, June 24, 2014. Born in Bayonne, NJ, he moved with his family to Oceanport in 1975 and to Eatontown several years ago. He was the proprietor of Bridge Amoco, Bayonne, NJ for many years and part owner of T/K racing engine builders, Greenbrook, NJ. He served his country honorably from 1961 to 1967 in the United States Coast Guard. He was a communicant of St. Dorothea's R.C. Church, Eatontown. Bernie had a love of cars and speed, in 1972 he was the NHRA Superstock Division Champion, in 1975 the NHRA Superstock World Points Champion, in 1991 he was inducted into the NHRA Hall of Fame and in 2007 received the Legion of Honor award for outstanding contributions to "Our Drag Racing Heritage." He transferred his love of auto racing over to boat racing where he was actively involved in building engines for Jersey Speed Skiffs. He was also an avid boater and a life member of the Long Branch Ice Boat & Yacht Club.
He was predeceased by his son, Joseph Michael Agaman in Dec. of 2013. Surviving is his loving wife of 50 years, Doris Smith Agaman, whom he has loved since he was 13 years old; daughters, Bernadette Hatfield and husband Sean of Fleming Island, FL and Allison Gervolino and husband Jim of Oceanport; daughter-in-law, Leanne Agaman of Hillsborough, NJ; grandchildren, Courtney, Brian, Amy, Katie, Michael, Jaime, Connor and Kaylin; brother to, Mary, Patty, Joseph, Maureen, Karen, Vinnie, Brian and Kevin; brother-in-law to, Joan, George, Edwin, Martin, Denise, Holly and Butch and uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at the Hoffman Funeral Home, 415 Broadway, Long Branch on Thursday, June 26th from 2-4 & 7-9PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place 10 am Friday, June 27th at St. Dorothea's R.C. Church, 240 Broad St., Eatontown, NJ. Interment Glenwood Cemetery, West Long Branch.

So impressive was Bernie's domination of NHRA Super Stock throughout either '75 or '76 that Drag News readers voted him Sportsman Driver Of The Year (over the drivers of faster, nationally-touring dragsters and Funny Cars). No one was more surprised that the editor. I counted the ballots twice, just to be sure. Great racer, great human, great friend to his many, many friends across North America.

Doris & Family,
You don't know me, but I spent many enjoyable Sundays competing against Bernie in Stock and Super Stock. He was always ready to listen and help if he could, and at the same time maintain himself as the passionate competitive racer that he was.
Although I have not seen him in awhile I will miss him.
