I began taking lessons with John in Little Silver when I was about 7 years old. For the better part of 10 years, John taught me everything from diversity of baseline shots, to serving at spots instead of simply serving to my opposition. He took me from a good player to a great player and enabled me with the skills to win a New Jersey State Championship when I was 16. His dedication to teaching was unmatched and his personality was contagious. In addition to tennis, John taught me about life, often staying well after my lessons were over to discuss school, my family, and the world. I am proud to say that I knew John as a coach, a mentor, and most importantly, as a friend. He will be greatly missed, but always remembered. RIP John.- Sincerely, Justin Drazin

To the Shaw family. I'm extremely sorry for your loss. John was a great coach to me and essentially got me to play college Div1 tennis. I will always remember him reaching out to me throughout my career and his tough tactics to get me back on track. I dreaded but loved our sessions together and i'm sure many felt the same.

I still remember hitting three forehands and running around the court to pick up balls and sprinting to get back..:) We drove an hour from Northern NJ for your clinics. They were THAT good...much thanks for being a wonderful teacher and friend to my entire family. Heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the Shaw family.

John, I'll never forget how much you believed in me and pushed me to be the best tennis player. For years, 7:00pm at jersey 34 was our time slot. To this day, I'll never forget "choppy feet". You were a very important part of my life, and i'll never forget you!

To John my friend,
What can I say, you gave me my first car…sure it was a 77 yellow chevette or “Vette” as I liked to call it. The dent in the front right quarter panel, you had to feather the gas pedal around turns so it wouldn't stall, and forget about getting up the hill on route 34 faster than 20 mph if you didn't get a good running start. But, still I was thankful. You were the one person who truly motivated me, who knew cursing & insulting someone was motivational, but it worked for me… You were ahead of your time with your drill sessions, the inside out forehand and taking the ball out of the air. You were truly gifted in your craft of tennis, but more so with your patience. I will truly miss you my friend

I can't believe such a great man was taken from us so soon... Now I know how lucky I was to have him as a tennis coach and friend. Didn't realize that when I traveled every weekend from Rochester, NY to Jersey 34 by plane to get my butt chewed out on the tennis court! I spent a 1/2 year with his best friends and trained with John everyday. (senior year) I was lucky to have been able to see who he was off the court as well... I now treasure those memories and the conversations as friends... Patti you are in my thoughts... Please know he will be very missed and was thought of as the best of the best! Blessings and Peace ... Always.

You made a huge difference not just in my life but in many lives. Hope you know how respected you were as a coach and as a person. Thank you for all you did for me. You will be greatly missed.

My condolences to the Shaw family members especially to his sister Charlotte & husband John, and his younger brother Walt. I was briefly a classmate of John's when I went to SJ school and remember him leading us in the daily class Rosery in second grade. I also have memories of playing catch at Line, tossing high pops. While we lost touch after those very early years after transfer to Hammonton, the fond memories remain. God guide your final journey John. Joe Pino

John was our daughter's tennis coach; he supported and trained her not only in tennis but also in life...allowed her to discover her talent and her confidence. I shall remember our travels to Little Silver and shall always thank John for the impact that he had on us all.... a kind, intelligent, insightful man and a great coach who had many gifts and graciously shared them with his students and their families. A true loss. Our sincere condolences to John's family. RCL
