Dorothy Stivers Obituary

Dorothy G. Stivers

Dorothy Stivers, Sioux Falls, SD, died November 11, 2016 in Sioux Falls.

Dorothy G. Stivers, daughter of Dick and Margaret (Petersen) Risley, was born July 30, 1930 in Davenport, Iowa. She grew up living at the Rock Island Arsenal where her father was employed as a civilian. Her mother, Margaret, was an excellent cook and gardener and Dorothy enjoyed helping her in those endeavors.

When her father died in 1948, Dorothy and her mother moved to Moline, IL for two years. Dorothy graduated from Rock Island High School in 1948 and from Augustana College in Rock Island in June 1952. She began her teaching career in Rockford, IL for two years and then in Skokie, IL for one year.

On August 13, 1955, she married the Reverend Lloyd Stivers who had a parish in Gary, IN. Two daughters were born in Gary, Laura Stivers and Jill Stivers Kreger. The family moved to Sioux Falls, SD in May of 1960 where Lloyd became the Pastor of St. Mark's Lutheran Church. Their son, David Stivers, was born in Sioux Falls.

Dorothy taught at All Saints School for 2 years and at Jane Addams School for 20 years, was active in AAUW and her congregation where she taught Sunday School, was chair of the Endowment Committee, and with other workers made quilts for Lutheran World Relief and local needs. She received her Masters from Augustana College, Sioux Falls in 1974.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Lloyd, daughters, Laura of Evanston, IL, Jill (Don) Kreger of Fort Collins, CO and their children, Alexandra and Jesse, and son, David (Kay) of Waconia, MN and their children, Margaret and Kristin. She is preceded in death by her parents, 2 infant brothers, and sister, Lillian Foster.

A visitation will be held at St. Mark's Lutheran Church on Friday, December 2, 2016 from 5:00-8:00 with family present from 6:30-8:00.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at St. Mark's Lutheran Church at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 3, with lunch and fellowship to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to St. Mark's Lutheran Church Endowment Fund.

My sincere condolences to your family. May God "who comforts us in all our trials" (2 Cor 1:4) comfort you and your family at such a difficult time. I know God will help you to endure because he cares for you (1Peter 5 :7).

Mrs. Stivers was a teacher of mine at Jane Addams. She was a wonderful, caring teacher and I was blessed to have been one of her students. My sincere sympathies to her family.

Lloyd and family,

Just heard of your loss and we are so sorry. Lloyd, you know how close we were back in the ANG days, I remember your wonderful wife and how special she was. God bless your family and God bless Dorothy my friend.

We remember Dorothy as a loving friend, and enthusiastic supporter of live music performance. Dorothy was a thoughtful and caring educator, who invested countless hours in making her community better and stronger. Dorothy's effective work on the Community Concerts/Live On Stage board was a labor of love.

Marietta and I pray God's comfort and peace for Lloyd and the family as you celebrate Dorothy's life and faith and mourn her loss. "Well done, good and faithful servant," Matthew 25:21.

Love and sympathy,
