Thomas Swanson Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

SWANSON, Thomas, Jr. THOMAS JOSEPH SWANSON, JR. Thomas Joseph Swanson, Jr., age 80, a native of Perry, Florida, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at his home in Brookhaven, Atlanta, Georgia, following a long illness. The cause of death was Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. He is survived by his loving wife, Marylee; a sister, Sara Swanson Belcher, of Tallahassee, Florida; a niece and nephew, Karen and Richard Belcher, also of Tallahassee; a niece, Sara Irene Lynn, of Port Ludlow, WA; also, a beloved god-child, Marie Baird Landis of Atlanta, daughter of the late Jane Landon Baird. Tom's honorable life was one of deep devotion to his wife and family and friends. In this respect he was given tremendous help by his dear friends Luther D. (Mac) McAllister (now deceased) and Frank Coughlin. A special mention of support goes to Jacquelyn Josey Hahne, a dear friend. Tom, as he was affectionately known, was a member of the State Bar of Georgia for over 50 years. He retired from Fannie Mae in December, 1991, as Vice President, Southeastern Regional Office, where he had proudly worked for 33 years. He was an avid golfer (if not a good one) and belonged to East Lake Golf Club and the Senior Golfers Assn. of Atlanta. He was also a member of the Heritage Society of University of Georgia, with a special interest in a foundation for the School of Veterinary Medicine there. At the deceased's specific instructions there will be no funeral or memorial services. It was his hope that his friends would each take a quiet moment to reminisce about their good times together. In lieu of flowers anyone desiring to make a memorial gift may do so to the charity of his or her choice. You may send a note or card to his wife Marylee at 1154 Brookhaven Row, Atlanta, Georgia, 30319. Good night, sweet prince. H. M. Patterson & Son Oglethorpe Hill Chapel

David and Beth McAlister

May 29, 2009

Tom was so kind when David's father, Mac McAlister, died. He and Frank went with Mac to the hospital, were there for him as long as doctors would allow, and met David, Fay and me in the hospital parking lot with sad news, hugs, and Mac's last words to them, "Take care of Fay." He was a good and caring friend even when his health was declining. We mourn the passing of a brave and compassionate heart.
