Thanks for setting me on the right path, Doc. I´ve had a life full of blessings because of you took me in when, literally, no other school would take me. :)

Dr. Smethurst tutored my son Leif about 30 years ago. While sitting in on a session, he discovered that I, like my son, was also dyslexic. He sure cleared up a lot of mysteries in my life about why I didn't know left from right. Many good memories of this man.
May he rest in peace

Dear Frank, William and the BFA community,
I just recently learned of Wood's passing. He is and will be deeply missed. I had the privilege of working with Wood over the years: first at Emory when he was on faculty in the Ed Studies Department, and later when he hired me to help BFA in fundraising, communications and school accreditation. It was an honor to work with Wood and Martha (and the talented BFA faculty & staff) and to see BFA grow and thrive. Wood brought light to the darkness in so many people's lives, including mine. Rest in peace, dear Doc, rest in peace.

Wood was a terrific, caring teacher. I took one class with him in 1974 and never forgot him. I still remember attending a lovely party for the class in your home one summer evening. God bless you all.

Wood Smethurst was my mentor, back when I was a 21 year old secretary at Emory University. He encouraged me, talked to me about my writing, and even arranged for me to go to a writer's retreat for a month. He was the first person to really make me feel that I was a "real" writer, even though I hadn't gotten much written, and nothing published. Thanks to him, that really changed. He was a wonderful, joyous, fun-loving, humorous, generous, gifted person. May God bless him eternally. Wood, thank you. I'll never forget you. Eve Fisher

He changed many people's educational paths and lives, including mine. I am sad to see that Wood passed away. I am also sad that I was unable to say goodbye to him as I have not seen him in years.

More recently, several of my patients attended Ben Franklin And I again marveled at his skill, compassion and wisdom.

Frank and William,
I was so sad to hear about your father. I have such nice memories of him. He spent a lot of time in Dover when I was young and of course North Haven. Later he took me to see Emory and probably helped get me in!! What a nice man. Thinking of you both. Love, Elisa

I only knew Dr. Smethurst for a couple of years but in just that short amount of time it seemed like a lifetime. He had a love for life and his friends and a love for his cat. I will miss his smile and his one liners. You were not a client but a friend, you will be missed.

I was greatly saddened to hear of Dr. Smethurst's passing. I held him in highest esteem as a man and as an educator. Some people of prodigious intellect make others feel dumb; Doc had a way of making everyone feel smarter. His memory will live on in the countless lives he touched with his warmth, wit, compassion and through his innovativeness as an educator. I will never forget him. My sympathy to Frank, William and Doc's BFA family as well.
Goodbye Doc. Thank you for all of your kindness and wisdom. I am sure you are now with Shadow and Groucho. You bestowed in me a great love for reading.

Dear Frank and William:
I was so sorry to hear of Wood's death. He was so great to me and my family growing up and I had a lot of respect for him. His passing will surely be a loss to the education community and to many kids in Atlanta. I know that the Ben Franklin Academy will carry on his traditions. I hope you two are both well. Best Regards, Drew Dekle

Wood was a wonderful friend to me and to Adam and Robin. I have him to thank for the lives of both of my children. He held my hand through difficult times, counseled me wisely, and directed Adam toward many good things, including his nursing career. I am deeply saddened. He touched and loved so many people. Frank and William, I wish I could give you both a big big hug right now: the kind of hug your father gave to many many people. With love, Bobby

Dear Frank and William,
I loved your dad. Such a sweet and gentle man. And one who accomplished so much in his field. I was a shy and somewhat scared kid when I came to live with you in Atlanta. Uncle Wood always made me feel comfortable, safe and valued. I always had fun with him, both in Maine and in Georgia. He gave a lot to all of us, and I will miss him, but not forget him.

Dear Frank and William, I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of your Father. I have very fond childhood memories of him as the jolly neighbor dad. His eyes always seemed to be smiling and they usually met the sight of you two with a both a smile and a chuckle. Although I never had the honor of being a sholoarly student of his, they way he taught us to just go outside and explore on our own is one of the reasons I have such a personal love of the outdoors to this day. I know you will forever miss him, but I hope each day brings you a little bit of his smile in your hearts. With sincere condolences, Chris W. Curry
