He was great. I wasn't that great in math, but his patient way of teaching helped me learn enough to exempt math when I attended UGA. He and English teacher Nancy Grider, both at Douglass High, were fantastic. Their love for their students transcended race and left me a better person for having known them. Coach Brannon was a great teacher, a great man and a great example to all of us. God bless his family and all those who love him.

Coach Brannon, I pray that your family knows and understands just how important you were to the students at Douglass. I recall coming across an AJC article on Charlie Brannon written around 1979. This article spoke on alot that we knew about Coach Brannon but it also told us a story that we did not know...that Coach Brannon was assigned to Douglass in 1968 twofold as staffing for a new school and desegregation efforts. We figured that Coach Brannon could have transferred after a few years, but he was still there with us...coaching football and teaching us "Jometry". I have this article in my memory book from high school. I know that the class of 1981 will always hold fond memories for Charlie Brannon. You will be missed.

Coach Brannon,
You were often thought of and have been discussed in my family for the past several years, as I have suffered dearly trying to get my children to love MATH as much as I did! You were the best and I concur, that you were one of the most patient teachers a student could have. Your were so amusing to our class and we often played silly jokes on you. It was always so much fun to have you allow us to " joke and play" with you. You didn't have to be that way. But it made learning a difficult subject much easier. I often tell my children and young students that I come into contact with, that making an A in your class was the hardest A I had made in High school. May God have a Sweet and peaceful resting place for you. And say hello to my Mom!. My sincere condolences to your wife and children./Tanja Anderson Holsey

He was not only my Head Football Coach at Douglass HS, but also taught my math class. I remember the day Coach Brannon taught us the Pythagorean Therom. I asked, "When will I ever use this in my life?" He responded, "probably never, but this is good brain exercise. " I appreciated his honest answer and to this day I still remember that A2 +B2=C2. Thanks for teaching me the power of brain exercising.

Family of Coach Brannon, I am deeply saddened by this loss and would have been at the service but I am traveling. As I sat in his 10th grade Geometry class, I felt like a complete failure. I could not get it. I often cried while seeking tutoring from him and many upperclassmen and still didn't understand. Coach Brannon and others spent countless hours with me explaining and re explaining. I spent the first test starring at the test paper and unclear what to do. I turned in a blank page with only my name. When I got my psper back I expected to see an F. Instead I had no grade. He told me to makean effort. By the second test I still didn't understand but I decided that coloring the squares with colored pencils was better than doing nothing. This time I got a D. Well by the end of the quarter I was able to understand a little more and eventually got Cs each qusrter. I share this because he had every right based on my lack of performance to fail me repeatedly. Instead, he encouraged me to do better and seek help. I stated in my earlier post that I eventually got a college degree in Math and went on ti Ga Tech. I have tutored countless students in Geometry since then. This was my most painful class at Douglass but I had the most phenomenonal teacher in the world. My own parents were math and science teachers and did not have the patience that he had. RIP Coach. I was a kid when Charlie Brannon was playing on that great historic Brown High State Championship team. Many of the players became well known nationally but Charlie was considered the leader. It is highly unusual to read as I did old sports articles describing a seventeen year old boy as now only a great athlete but as one of the finest individuals and leaders the writers had ever seen. It is hard to describe how much of a hero he was to us who were lucky enough to have him as day camp counselor. Above all he stood for effort, honesty and integrity. Even though it as been many years since I have seen him, I still regard him as a hero and one of the greatest men I have known.
