Michael Funk Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

FUNK, Michael MICHAEL KELLY FUNK Beloved father, husband, son, brother and friend Michael Kelly Funk, of Acworth Georgia, was called into heaven on October 24, 2011. A Memorial Service will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday at McEachern United Methodist Church in Powder Springs, GA with Rev. Brian Tillman officiating. Michael was born in LaSalle Illinois on September 24th, 1967. He spent his early childhood in southern California and then his high school years in West Lafayette Indiana. Michael was a passionate person, his drive for excellence was evident from an early age. While attending West Lafayette High School, Michael was Indiana's state debate champion and recipient of the Phil N. Eskew Mental Attitude Award 1984-1985. The recipients of this award, nominated by their principal and coach, must excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in football. Michael was also a fierce competitor on the football and baseball fields. His senior year, Michael was co-captain of his football team and led them to the state finals. Michael attended Wabash College on the prestigious Lilly Scholarship: character, creativity, and academic accomplishment, the highest ranking award offered by the college. Michael excelled in academics, but his accomplishments in football and baseball are what make him a legend at Wabash. He was a two-time, First Team All-American receiver. He led the nation in receiving in 1989. His 9.7 catches per game in 1989 remain a record for one season, as does his average of 6 catches per game in his 38-game career. Michael was also First Team All-Conference in Baseball in 1988 when he hit .412 in league games. Michael was inducted in the Wabash Hall of Fame in 1999. After college, Michael shortly worked for Price Waterhouse before starting his own medical billing business, Healthtech Dynamics, at the age of 24 in Los Angeles, California. Within a few years, he sold his company to PerSe Technologies where he also was hired as vice president of sales. This role took him to Georgia, where he eventually left Perse to pursue his entrepreneurial dream. In 2003, Michael founded Anodyne Health, a medical billing and business intelligence company. His ability to "wow" physicians with his unique vision of presenting data, gained him great respect in the industry. In growing Anodyne, Michael was greatly assisted with venture capitol funding which culminated in the successful acquisition of Anodye by Athena Health in 2009. Michael was currently employed at Athena. Michael's biggest accomplishment in life was as a devoted husband and father. Michael married his wife Christie in 1995 and they have 3 children Chris, Ellie and John. He was actively involved in coaching youth baseball and was loved by all of his players and parents. Michael's passing leaves a great hole in many of our hearts. His impact, whether it be as a husband, father, friend or colleague will leave a tremendous mark. We are all better people because we knew Michael Kelly Funk. A Celebration of Life Reception will immediately follow the service at The Governors Towne Club in the clubhouse, 4200 Governors Towne Drive, Acworth, GA. 30101. Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home and Crematory in Marietta will be handling the arrangements. www.mayeswarddobbins.com

Mike was a good teammate and leader at WLHS. He was always a competitor, but also a gentleman. May he rest in peace and his family find strength in the impact he had on so many friends, teammates and colleagues.

I played at WLHS with Mike, as a junior on the State Runners-up team. Mike was our example of quiet(er) strength and unwaivering leadership. I always respected Mike for his talent, his mind, his wit, and the glint in his eye. Safe travels out in the universe, Mike. You are good people.

I knew Mike from WLHS. He had a uniquely intensibility and passion on the field. It's very sad that his life was so shortened. My family's thoughts and prayers are with the entire Funk family.

Saddened and stunned. I was privileged to know Mike in my capacity as a volunteer assistant debate coach at WLHS. He amazed me with his capacity to shift from one task to another with ease. I was also always impressed with his deep understanding of other people. I have often used him as an example of how to balance activities and apply one's self.

My prayers and thoughts are with Mike, his immediate and extended family and all of his friends who serve as a testament to his life and character. I had the privilege of playing both high school and college football with Mike, and was a fraternity brother with him and for that I am thankful. God Bless Mike and his family.

I am so honored to know Michael and the Funk family. Michael was a wonderful neighbor and had a fierce work ethic. I was so often humbled and inspired watching Michael and Christie attack his illness head on and remain positive and focused on his road to health. Christie, Chris, Ellie and John my prayers are with you.

I grew up in West Lafayette and went to high school with Mike. I was a year ahead of him in school but we played football together for a couple of years. Mike was a great guy. He always worked hard and stepped up to do whatever we asked of him. He had a great attitude about life and I feel like I benefited greatly from knowing him. I am sorry to hear of his passing. It sounds like he went on to great success in business, but more importantly in family life.
