Eloise Chandler Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

CHANDLER, Eloise ELOISE PENCE CHANDLER Eloise Pence Chandler was born on September 16, 1924 in Hamburg, Arkansas. She married John D. Chandler of Athens, Alabama on August 27, 1948. John passed away November 22, 2009. Eloise died Friday, May 6, 2011. Because of the work Christ did on her behalf, she went to heaven. Eloise was predeceased by her parents, Lawrence Jacob and Elsie Shick Pence; her sister, Clarice Gray and niece June Gray Wyrick of Texarkana , Arkansas. She is survived by her children, David (Christie) of Dallas, GA, Bill (Jan) of Kennesaw, GA, Larry (Shirley) of Marietta, GA and Laura (Jim) Strickland of Lilburn and eight grandchildren. Eloise studied at Athens College in Athens, Alabama. After school, she moved as a newlywed to Nashville, Tennessee. In 1961 she and her husband moved to Atlanta and raised their family. As a parent of children who attended Pace Academy in the 1960's and 70's she logged thousands of miles car-pooling and was the ever present mother on field trips, class parties and spend the night events. Her husband and sons were all members of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity so she hosted many events over several decades, never complaining and always the "mother" to young men who had no place to stay other than the Chandler hotel. As the wife of a business executive, Eloise was the perfect hostess. She entertained customers and friends from all over the world. She had a wonderful way of making people feel at ease and comfortable in a variety of circumstances. Eloise accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior when a child, and as a young mother, she led her children in family devotions. She was the spiritual head of her family until her husband John was also born again in 1983. She led the Sunday School Department at Northside Independent Methodist Church in Sandy Springs and later Faith Independent Methodist Church. She was a wonderful example of a cheerful spirit and a tender heart. In lieu of flowers, a memorial in her name may be sent to Faith Methodist Church and designated for missions, 5200 Dallas Highway, Suite 200, Box 168 , Powder Springs, GA 30127. The family will receive friends from 1 - 3 PM, Tuesday, May 10th at Carmichael Funeral Home in Marietta (770) 424-4924 with the funeral service immediately following the visitation at 3 PM in the Chapel of the funeral home.

Dearest Larry and the brothers Chandler and Family ,
I can oh so FEEL your lost after losing MY Father only last year!
She sounds like a truly remarkable lady!
When people tell me they are sorry for my loss, I simply respond: "I was blessed to have a wonderful Father." And I was!! And y'all were too, blessed to have a wonderful Mother!
This is a difficult time, I know, just hold on tight and y'all WILL get through it!
PLEASE contact me after all the events are over and things settle down.
I've got some really terrific books I can recommend.
Just hang in there for now, and deal with things from minute to minute.
My love in Christ!

What a lovely tribute to an extraordinary lady. I remember the time when she really got after Laura and I when we rode our bikes along Mount Vernon from her house to mine. We were in the doghouse, to be sure, but she said her piece and didn't hold it against us in anger. I also remember the fun times spent at the many gatherings around the pool. May these wonderful memories and more keep and sustain you all. God bless.

we will always remember fondly

The obituary did a beautiful job of "capturing" Eloise. They don't make them like Eloise anymore. What a privilege to have known her and John -- and to know their family.
Love in Christ,
