Family-Placed Death Notice
DANIEL, Elgin L. Officer Elgin L. Daniel age 53 of Ellenwood passed away on November 12, 2012. Officer Daniel retired from the DeKalb County Police Department after 26 years of service and is currently with Henry County Police Department, and a member of Greater Travelers Rest Baptist Church in Decatur. Officer Daniel is survived by his wife of 29 years; Teresa Daniel, daughter; Schariss Daniel, sons; Gabriel Daniel, Jairus Daniel, mother; Canolia Daniel , sisters; Doris and her husband Rev. Ronus Thomas, Delores and her husband Darrell Amos, brothers; Edward Daniel, Caesar and his wife Jacquelyn Daniel, sister-in-laws; Barbara Hightower, Betty Kenney, Sandra Jackson, Althea and her husband Rufus Kinnebrew, Carolyn Hightower, brother Wendell and his wife Denis Hightower, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service for Officer Daniel will be held on Friday, November 16, 2012 at 1:00 P.M. at Greater Travelers Rest Baptist Church at 4650 Flat Shoals Parkway, Decatur, GA with Pastor E. Dewey Smith officiating, interment will follow at Fairview Memorial Gardens. Family will receive friends on Thursday, November 15 from 5-8 P.M. at the funeral home. Elgin is a true servant and he exemplified it through his relationships with others...through family relationships, his police career, coaching little league baseball, etc. by going out of his way to help and be a blessing to people he came in contact with.
I had the privilege of coaching baseball with Elgin for 9 years at Gresham Park and learned so much from him about character building, teamwork and instilling positive experiences in the lives of our players.
God's word states that "whoever wants to be great must become a servant.". He measures greatness in terms of how many people you serve. Therefore, last Monday he needed another great servant to enter into his kingdom and you were chosen...Congratulations on your promotion...

I was one of his sergeants at DeKalb P.D., and noticed his dedication and service to the job he decided to do, those many years ago. I regret not being able to attend his homegoing, but bear in mind; I just know he will remain in your loving hearts and memories.

Very sad too hear about my classmate, When we attended Slater, I remember Elgin and his friends excited about our up coming 6th grade prom, who they would ask out. We were all excited.
Then we graduated, to attend Price High. Elgin played football and was a good student. We were the graduating class of 1977.
I'm grateful to have known him, and proud too see the man he became.
He was such a quiet presence with a good heart.

I only knew Officer Daniel for a brief few minutes after he responded to an accident in front of my house. It seems I only realize now how his treatment to myself, my neighbor, and the accident victim was above and beyond the call of duty. My sympathies go out to the family and all who knew him. The goodness in a person is shown by his good deeds. I am a have been a resident in Henry County for approximately five years. I only have good praises for the police in Ellenwood and Stockbridge. Whenever I had a problem, the police department always acted promptly. By his heroic actions in the incident which caused his life, I know that he gave his all and will receive his award in Heaven.
