Bernard BESAL Obituary

BESAL, Bernard Paul "Barney" Bernard P. Besal, age 57, passed from this earth on Friday, September 15, 2017, surrounded by family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Robert J. Besal and Helen Marie Besal. He is survived by his wife Nancy, his 8 older siblings Bob, Mike, Betty, Dee, Richard, Joe, Helen, and Bill, his daughter Tiffany and her husband Stuart, his beloved grandson John, and many nieces and nephews. Known to his multitude of friends and business associates as Barney, he was charismatic and loving and will be sorely missed. He owned 3 businesses involved in commercial kitchen exhaust system cleaning and maintenance and was a nationally known leader in that industry. He was awarded 2 U.S. patents for inventions pertaining to his work. In 1989 Barney was one of the founders of the International Kitchen Exhaust Cleaning Association, a national trade organization that sets standards and rules to advance the quality of the work to protect life and property by preventing kitchen exhaust system fires. Barney and Bill spent fall weekends at their deer camp near Thomaston with their many deer hunting buddies all trying to bag "The Hartford". His love of his work was matched by his passion for motorcycling and Ducati motorcycles in particular. Over the years Barney acquired a large collection of Ducatis, many of which he lovingly restored to museum quality. He was a talented motorcycle roadracer in the 1980s and a fierce competitor on the race track. Now he rides with angels. Godspeed, Barney. A service will be held to honor Barney at H M Patterson Oglethorpe Chapel, 4550 Peachtree Rd NE, Brookhaven, GA on Wednesday, September 20, 11:00 a.m., with burial following at Arlington Memorial Park. The family will receive guests Tuesday, September 19, 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Online condolences may be made at www.hmpattersonoglethorpe.com.

As some people journey through life, they leave footprints wherever they go -- footprints of kindness and love, courage and compassion, humor and inspiration, joy and faith. Even when they're gone, we can still look back and clearly see the trail they left behind -- a trail bright with hope that invites us to follow.

Kerry Penny told me of your passing, Barney. What a loss for our old PiHI community. I loved going to the Besal Bash and catching up with old friends. Your party crushed any "formal" reunion Pius ever had-attendance at those surely suffered due to the Bash. So glad to hear you got to Italy to ride those Ducatis my friend. Love to the Basal clan.

We were so very sorry to hear from Todd of Barney's passing after his fight with cancer. Barney was an amazing friend to Todd and it was a pleasure to share some visits with him and the family over the years. Y'all were always so welcoming and entertaining each time we were able to spend time with y'all. I loved knowing Todd had such a close friend to share his passion of motorcycles and riding with. We are sorry we were unable to attend his service, but we really enjoyed recently spending time with family and friends listening to all the wonderful stories and memories of just what a smart, hard working, loving, kind hearted, generous person Barney was throughout his life. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who knew him; he was very much loved and cherished and will be greatly missed.

One of Barney's IKECA presentations was on writing kitchen exhaust system descriptions which have incorporated into my RFP bids and have been told by recipients that it tipped the scales in our direction as demonstration of our knowledge and professionalism. I will always be grateful for the positive influence Barney's had on my business and professional development.

Dee,
Thanks for those kind words. The Besal family is truly a remarkable group of people. I can only hope my clan will handle my departure with the style and grace you fine people exhibited during Barney's send off.

Peace to you and all of your lovely family.

September 25, 2017

Heartfelt thanks from the Besal family to every one of you for enriching our brother's life. He was proud to call each of you his friend. As much as he meant to you so did you matter in his life.
True legends rarely come along and how lucky all of us were to know a real one. He is a true example of a life will lived.
Carry on his legacy by caring for others, inspiring those you meet and bestowing kindness on all.
XOXO Dee Besal ( aka nurse Ratchett)
PS. I really wasn't mean... He just got a bit cranky at times.....Peace

Barney your short number of years is surpassed by the kindness and generosity that you showed to all that knew you. Your everlasting devotion to the industry that you loved has created better lives for all of us that still practice what you have taught us. Godspeed to you, and may Nancy and your family have some solace in knowing that you will be forever missed by so many that will always share their grief.

I knew Barney only from the IKECA meetings I attended, but those few contacts were enough to convince me that he was a great man who cared a great deal about his chosen industry, about implementing ideas that saved lives and property and about helping others in the business to do the same. He was knowledgeable and passionate about it. And when the daytime business at the IKECA shows turned into evening socializing, Barney could tell a story or a joke with the best. You will surely be missed friend.

We will miss you, Barney, thank you for being a most gracious friend to so many of us through the years. Hosting the Barney Bash and welcoming so many into yours and Nancy's home, has given us a memory to hold of your giving heart...especially old OLA classmates.
Nancy, (and all the family) during this most difficult time, we will pray that Jesus and our Mother Mary give much comfort and strength to each of you.

To the entire Besal Clan: Although I did not have the honor of meeting Barney, I feel I knew him in a way--all of you for that matter--based upon the many stories Richard shared. I heard that Barney was a great man, loved by all. I am sure Barney's passing is a huge loss for your wonderful family, and I can barely imagine the depth of your grief. Please accept my deepest condolences for the loss of your dear brother, Barney. Sending prayers skyward for Barney, and for you all. Terri, Henderson, NV

Barney, while words fail so many of us, I'm confident that you and your family know that you were loved by an uncountable number of friends and peers. You set an example that we should strive to meet. I came to love you as I would an older brother who took me under his wing and showed me and my family warmth and great kindness.

Dear Nancy
Therese and I were heartbroken when we heard of Barn's condition. We remember the two of you with great fondness. I will always credit his encouragement and cooperation, above others, with the creation of IKECA. It wouldn't have happened without him. Beyond that, our partnership with Flame Gard was a great time. Collaborating with his insight and attention to detail is a memory I'll always treasure. Our love goes out to you and Tiff. Phil and Therese Ackland

"The Bernard Besal", a true renaissance man, humble in his brilliance. The consummate host. I will miss his biscuits in the morning before the hunt, his Bloody Marys in the afternoon, and our Bourbon samplings by the boiler on those cold nights. Work days at the club will never be the same without Barney, his tractor, and some "cool and refreshing" Gin and Tonics afterward. We shot at alot of deer over the years, and actually hit a few!

His love, friendship, and guidance have been priceless to me over the years. He treated me like a brother and my kids as his own, I couldn't even get the truck unloaded before they were running down to Barney's camper for the joke of the week every Friday. He would make "special" biscuits for my girls, with no cheese, wrap them up, and write their names on them so no one else would eat them.

My family and I mourn his passing, but are so thankful for the time we were able to spend in the presence of this great man. Knowing Barney has made me a better person.

My sincerest condolences to Nancy and the rest of the Besal family. You all have given my family such a wonderful gift by allowing us to spend so much time with Barney over the last 7 months.

I am still in shock but I am sure he is in Haven with God and I look forward to the day when I see him again! Take care my friend!

Our paths crossed momentarily in high school some 40 years ago. Barney was a year younger than me but somehow we shared experiences both on the football field and around school activities. I remember that Barney was a fun-loving and friendly guy. I was so impressed to read about his business successes and innovative career. There are not enough words to convey such an untimely passing. It seems he was richly blessed in the matters of the heart with family, friends and had a full rich life! Godspeed Barney!

So saddened to learn of Barney's passing. I only knew him thorough our professional interests with NFPA and IKECA, but he was such a wonderful man, full of passion. Occasionally, he would send me an email of his bike collection and you could see the pride in ownership. He always helped me with sound advice that only comes from experience and first-hand knowledge. Barney's passing caught me by surprise and I feel for his family's loss. Rest in peace, Barney and God bless all of his family as they mourn the loss of a great human.

There is no way to describe the goodness known as Barney. He set an honest high standard in a dirty difficult dangerous industry. His kindness to me will never be forgotten.

I didn't know Barney real well. He was a grade ahead of me at Saint Pius. We played football together for the Golden Lions and I always looked at him as a big scary guy on the field, but off the field he was a nice guy. About five years ago I found out he would hold a big party at his house called the Besal Bash and it was pretty much a multi - year mini Saint Pius reunion. I'm so glad I went that year. Ran into old friends I thought I would never see again, and drooled over his motorcycle collection. One of the best parties I ever went to. It must have cost him a fortune because it was open bar and the place was packed. A very generous man to open up his home like that. Thanked him profusely for putting on such an event and reconnecting with old friends. RIP Barney.

Not long ago, someone told me that a gentleman is a man that puts the comfort of others ahead of his own comfort. If that is the measure then, Barney is the greatest gentleman that I have ever known. His tendency to extend kindness, gentleness and, generosity equally abundantly to all people make him the most exceptional model that most of us will ever know. i will always miss him. I am grateful to our Heavenly Father for ending Barney's discomfort and, for granting him eternal peace.
