Michael HORSEY Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

HORSEY, Michael Michael James Horsey, 68, of Atlanta, GA, passed away peacefully on November 29th surrounded by his loving family. Born in Worthing, Sussex, U.K., on June 21, 1945, Mike was a citizen of both the United States and the United Kingdom. He was graduated from the University of Georgia with undergraduate and graduate degrees in history. He was a lifelong student of history, particularly as it related to the Olympic Games, Coca-Cola, and the family genealogy. His intellectual curiosity and passion for global travel brought him to experience many different countries and cultures throughout his lifetime. After completing his education, he returned to his high school alma mater, Georgetown Preparatory School in Bethesda, Maryland, where he mentored students as a coach, teacher, and administrator for over 35 years. As a coach he founded the Georgetown Prep Cross Country Classic, one of the premier high school cross-country running events on the east coast, and trained athletes who would become successful competitors at the national and international level. As Dean of Admissions for more than 25 years, he admitted over half of the school's 5,200 living alumni. He is fondly remembered by his former students for inspiring them to lifelong success in academics, athletics, and personal achievements through his compassion and genuine interest in their well-being. Mike is survived by his two sons, Michael Laurence Horsey and James Sebastian Horsey of Silver Spring, Maryland, his proudest legacy, to whom he was a loving and generous father; and by his four sisters, Liz Horsey of Atlanta; Catherine Horsey of Dallas, Texas; Meg Schley and her husband Frank Schley of Columbus, Georgia; and Jo Glass and her husband Dan Glass of Newnan, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Boykin Horsey Jr. and Naomi Devine Horsey; by his grandmother, Mary Hilda Miles Devine; and by the much-loved family caregiver Mary Chelsey; all of whom shaped his life. He will be remembered most for both his modesty and his loving and generous heart. His life will be celebrated with a Mass of Christian Burial that will take place in Atlanta, Georgia, at St. Mary's Chapel in Holy Spirit Catholic Church at noon on Saturday, December 7th, and another in Maryland. Interment will be at Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston, South Carolina. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home, 760 Pollard Blvd SW, Atlanta GA 30315.
